I take it that you are still putting forward this theory because it hasn't later been explained either way in S6 or S7? Actually, you'd better not answer that, had you!?? ;-)

I think there is lot of mileage in this suggestion. CSM definitely wanted Mulder as his son, and has always preferred him over Spender. It took CSM years to finally make contact with his son and meet up with him. Perhaps he knew Spender not to be his real son, but was willing to push him into the fray, to test him out, to see if he might acknowledge him finally. However, Spender let him down (as he saw it). Then it was no particular hardship to kill Spender. A great way to punish Cassandra too! I like your theory.
