I was just thinking how this is like going back in time for you. I wonder how much episodes change in the mind when observed through hindsight.

Yes, Samantha in the diner was never the real Samantha in my mind. CSM was trying to persuade Mulder to join the Group and he was trying everything he could to do so. The real sister would not have rejected Fox like she did.

I see you addressed the point about Spender not being dead, perhaps. I think he is. I think Krycek is so cool, how he is in the action yet always out of it too. Do you think Krycek was sent as chauffeur with Spender because CSM knew that Spender wouldn't have to bottle to do the spiking? Or did Krycek just come to his assistance because he felt sorry for him? Or did K do it, to rub his nose in his failure, or to make him take notice finally and understand the significance of what he was involved in? Or all of the above!? One nit-pick point: doesn't the spiking produce something that is toxic to the spiker? Hasn't the green ooze previously caused the attacker to cough and have streaming eyes?

I don't know about Mulder eyeing up Scully. I wondered if he was representing all the looks of the basketball players. Almost like he was doing it to draw her attention to the fact that here was a room of red blooded males who might be looking at her 'like that'. Does that make sense? He might almost have been thinking "Ooh Scully, dressing in a skirt's a bit dicey with all this testosterone in the air!" It amused him too.

I think CSM does get scarier as he goes along. The more there is at stake, the more he fills me with dread. You mentioned whether Mulder would have shot Cassandra: hmmmm. I wonder if we were meant to make a direct comparison with CSM shooting Spender. Even though Mulder could perhaps fully understand the necessity to kill Cassandra and she was there begging him to do it, you can't help but think that Mulder wouldn't be so cold-blooded. His compassion might always come first. cf CSM when it comes to bumping off his own child! (although I like islandgirl's suggestion that perhaps Spender was not his son!) Veronica Cartwright is one of the best guest stars they have ever had, IMO.

I think people are hard on Mulder if they blame him for not dismissing Fowley out of hand. She was his girlfriend in the past and with that sort of history, he would have been loath to see all bad in her. It is unfortunate for Mulder that he wasn't able to see her double-crossing ways, but he has never been prejudiced. I could see he might give her the benefit of the doubt, before condemning her. And you're right - he was a bit suspicious of the kiss. He did just sort of take it!

I've asked Sam this - but do you think Mulder wasn't in it enough? I missed him at times.....
