By the time Scully got close, the bubbling had subsided and though she was a little cautious approching him, I don't think she was in any danger from 'fumes'. Obviously, he healed very quickly, (like they do) and he pretty soon had the upper hand again. I always asked the question back then - if this was the way to kill these types (as recommended by Jeremiah Smith) how come Mulder's effort failed? Didn't he stick the spike in far enough? I've always wondered. Instead of dying, the BH reaches behind his neck, in a Terminator like fashion, and pulls the spike out of his neck! Huh???!!
