Subject: Arcadia - Rob and Laura have come home to roost

Ah the long awaited ‘Mulder and Scully are married episode’. It started quite promisingly, I enjoyed the jokes and I was aware how much Mulder was getting into the role; whereas Scully was tolerating the situation. As the episode progressed, Scully’s discomfort became more apparent. But why did the couple thing fizzle out so suddenly? I liked all that interaction with the community, when they were moving in and the only other time ‘Rob’ and ‘Laura’ had to perform was when they were invited for dinner. On that scene, I loved how Rob told the other couple how they met at a UFO conference and that Laura was into all the new age stuff. A perfect moment to say something like that, knowing she can’t answer him back.

What was with Mulder’s pink shirt and Scully’s girlie hair?

Mulder was so into the couple thing, I thought. He was forever gripping Scully hard about the shoulders. Every scene. He was really overdoing it and he seemed quite possessive. I wondered how much Scully was enjoying it, when she tried to get out from under his arm, once they were left alone in the house. So, Mulder’s good at playing hubby, but I got the impression although he was enjoying the role, he hadn’t thought it through. Scully was as practical as ever, complaining about the toothpaste lid and the toilet seat. Cliches really, but it went to Scully’s overall tidiness, thereby showing there is quite a gap between them and quite a lot of differences.

There was some quite suggestive stuff in there, wasn’t there? “Lets get it on, honey” and “ Come on Laura, we’re married now” and the eyebrow look. I asked myself why it was Mulder who took to the play acting so well and Scully seemed awkward. Was it because for her marriage is a subject too close for comfort?

The X File was not particularly convincing. OK, I got the point that the ‘monster’ is created from the thrown away garbage of our lives and it can come back to haunt you – a dig at throwaway society, but I don’t understand why Gogolak wanted a society controlled by rules. It was a bit silly, although I thought the squelchy thud as the creature came after people was cool.
