Subject: A ship called Arcadia is definitely sinking!

I happened to rewatch the dreaded Arcadia last week while making copy to a friend, and I still don't really know what to think about it. The first time I remember feeling a bit uncomfortable, which I had now gotten over, but there's still something terribly wrong in the episode. It's not really bad, but.... It's not as good as it could be.

The whole Mulder and Scully going undercover as a married couple idea is cute, and it could have lead to something very shippy, but even the idea itself has been used a dozen of times, and I've already seen it better done in another show. But for some reason, the powers that be had apparently decided to go the 6th season "funny" path, instead of the shippy path. Thought it probably wouldn't have been a good one even with more shippy stuff in it, that would have probably just caused the ship called Arcadia to sink for good.

I feel that they have tried to make an episode around the idea of getting Mulder and Scully married, and forgotten to write a setting for that, and somehow forgotten to write anything cool about the basic idea at the same. Okay, some of the lines were funny, and I think that we really see a part of the real Mulder in this one, but it could have been so much better too.

I didn't like the idea of the garbage monster at all. It felt like so far fetched, so pointless. Why squeeze it in? Sometimes there are really crazy people out there, and this could have been a story about them (though I guess that wouldn't have been an x-file, then), but at least it would have been more credible than a monster made out of garbage. Does anyone remember the time when X-files was really creepy because the stories were more realistic, something that could have really happened? Or was there a time like that? Maybe my memory is just playing tricks on me.

Cookie monster.
