I think Mulder and Scully have a much closer relationship than the average person who doesn't tell everyone in their family about their internet activities. I think that's part of what CC had created with this "couple". In many ways they are like one person so anything at all that deviates from complete openness between them can be looked at as a violation. It wsn't always this way but I think as the years have gone on they have grown to the point where they do take each other for granted and expect to be involved in each other's lives in every respect. I don't think it's something that they consciously want to have happen but I think it is getting to that point.

I thought it seemed strange myself that Mulder hadn't told Scully he had been writing to this woman. I wonder if it would have seeemd that way if it had been a guy? A professor at a university or something that Mulder was gathering info from? Probably not so that's where the jealousy comes in!
And was Scully bothered by her calling him Fox?

I should add that I wasn't discounting that the jealousy is definately there too. Only that it was even deeper than a romantic feeling of betrayal. M&S are beyond normal relationship stuff. It's that soul/kinship stuff you were talking about in your fencesitter/noromo post. It may not be entirely healthy but Mulder and Scully aren't exactly the poster children for a regular healthy relationship of any kind between two people! It can be ideal but it can also be smothering and all consuming.
