Subject: "There are far fewer repeats than there used to be and... bla bla..." - The BBC
In reply to: sam 's message, "what about....." on 23:04:32 04/09/00 Sun

Yeah right!!

I got a reply from the BBC today, telling me I got it all wrong. The Brittish public just loves repeats!! Can't have enough of them. And the schedules... aren't they just full of variety?! :oP

In my mind I keep seeing the madly grinning faces of BBC Information employees, thrilled by the prospect of getting home in the evening and turning on their TV sets to watch "Only Fools and Horses".

Here's what they wrote:

"Dear Mat

Thank you for your e-mail regarding 'The X Files'.

I am sorry that you have been inconvenienced with the decision not to show the series in one continuous run. In order to keep our weeknight schedules lively and interesting for all our viewers we have decided to make some changes to Wednesday nights on ONE.

With ongoing series' such as 'The X Files', which is 20 episodes in all, we often take breaks at specific points in order to provide a greater choice in our programme output. To diversify our schedules during the coming spring season, Wednesday evenings will see a rich mixture of feature films, home-grown series and groundbreaking documentaries over the
next few weeks.

We understand that the decision will not be popular with fans of 'The X Files' but as a public service broadcaster, we have to cater for the wide and varied tastes of all our viewers. In doing so, we cannot always commit prime time slots to one programme for an extended period.

Please be assured that 'The X Files' will be returning to BBC ONE later in the year, although no definite date has been set as yet.

With regard to the general output on the BBC, I can understand that here are occasions when there is little of personal interest on any channel, but what's on offer may interest many others. The BBC tries to provide something for every section of the UK population across its television, radio, online, educational and other services. Although we cannot manage it at every minute of every hour every day, we know from research that there is almost always something for everyone across any typical week.

There are far fewer repeats than there used to be and requests for them far outweigh the complaints we receive. Repeating programmes offers another opportunity to see - a repeat for one person is often a first viewing for another.

Thank you for taking the time to contact the BBC with your comments

Regards

Paul Johnston
BBC Information"

Nothing about why some programs - like Robot Wars and Buffy - have one or more repeats, or why the BBC first says one thing and then does another. IMHO that's awfully close to a lie, or a broken promise.

Mat
