My argument still holds because I think Scully's little speech in that first scene was to explain the characters to the viewers and so we were hearing CC tell us about Mulder. So there's an inconsistency. (In an XF ep? Really?
;-) )

I guess you could be right on Mulder being flippant (Devlin has an idea about that too in another post). I'd have to watch the ep again (oh no!) and study his reading of the line. All I remember is he sounded kind of tired when he said it. Or was that DD who was tired from boredom?

As for Scully assessing her brand new partner, since she already had all the dirt on him beforehand then she must have *really* wanted to work with him. You know, this whole set up wasn't Blevins' or CSM's idea at all! Scully planned the whole thing just so she could get clsoe to Mulder! And this 7 year "don't touch the merchandise" policy she has going is just a smokescreen to fool us all! We're onto her game. She wanted him from the beginning. It's all clear now!
