Here's an idea. This line was a DD adlib, right? Well maybe he knew that us loyal fans would need *something* to talk about after this horrible episode and knew that this was just controversial enough to get us all going!

Or maybe he was so mad at the fact that he even had to do this horrible episode that he wanted to make sure everyone hated it as much as he did and therefore intentionally put another log on the fire!

Though I've only seen this episode once, thank goodness, I don't remember Mulder seeming flippant or sarcastic at all in his remark. If I remember correctly he seemed a little frustrated.

I do have to agree that the pilot argument holds up, det. I mean, the whole purpose of that little speech by Scully in Blevins office was to introduce the viewer to the character of Fox Mulder (and aren't we glad we got introduced!).
