Subject: Drugs wearing off now.....
In reply to: detoured 's message, "Re: How the Ghosts Stole Christmas: Chris Carter on Drugs?!" on 01:08:00 02/06/00 Sun

Chrison drugs? Wow, you really were baffled! I’ve calmed down a bit now. I think I’ll always find the bloody shooting and crawling across the floor annoying, but there was plenty that entertained, as you state so comprehensively.

The Scully screaming thing was not as bad as Scully fainting. This seemed very unlikely. OK, shout out in shock (Lyda did look pretty ghostlike when she marched unexpectedly through the door) but Scully took so long examining M & L’s wounds, that you would have thought she would see it with the forensic eye for detail and not like a wimpy heroine. So, fainting was a bad move. She didn’t faint when Leonard Betts’ eyes opened in his severed head, did she? I loved how Scully says – fiddling around for her gun – “I’m armed” and Lyda says “You’re what?” really patronisingly. Scully produces the gun in a shaking hand finally and repeats “I’m armed” All totally irrelevant to our ghosts.

Well, Mulder has often dragged Scully out to meet him at the dead of night, to pursue cases and stake out a place, so I’m not altogether sure he came up with the ‘excuse’ of the haunted house. Yes, it was Christmas Eve, but if you’re not into celebrating yourself (the family is supposedly Jewish….) then maybe it was just typical Mulder. He didn’t consider Scully’s plans. He narcissistically thought she wanted to be there, as Maurice pointed out. The lonely part was maybe the unconscious reason Mulder did it, not the conscious reason. This story needed to be told on a Christmas Eve too, and if you wanted to see the ghosts, this was your chance.

Mulder did take the car keys, when it looked like Scully was going to win this particular argument and was on the point of leaving. That’s what I think. Otherwise, presumably Maurice would have had to go outside and find them, if Scully dropped them.

Loved Mulder’s face at the sight of the books being moved around. He does have childlike wonder, though, doesn’t he? Like his face on the ice at the end of FTF. So amazed and happy. The multiple repeating rooms was great. I think that and the bodies and the disappearing staircase were classic ghostly happenings. A hundred Hammer House of Horror films come to mind, or stories by Edgar Allan Poe. I think there should have been more ‘jumps’. Mulder and his torch gag would have scared me s***less too!

I noted that this was the first time Mulder or Scully has made reference to their being (or not being) a couple. How did you think Mulder said “We’re not lovers”. ? It sounded sort of sad and must have been a difficult line to get right. It needed to have the right tone and I think DD made it sound just the right amount of self-conscious, tinged with regret. Other interpretations?

Finally – I didn’t want to know what the pressies were either. Mulder’s looked like a video, is all I would say. It’s best not to know. Sort of private and personal, their little present exchanging….
