Subject: About Mat's post on page 1 regarding beliefs...

(With a very minor Season 6 and a general Season 7 spoiler)

Mat wrote to me:

Hi Det!

ITA, it's great to come here and see the old gang again! And... We have you to thank for it!! These boards are working out really well, aren't they? :-) :-) :-)

What you said about beliefs, was that with the rest of S6 (and S7) in mind? I mean, you said 'moreso'... sounds like there's a whole lot of interesting things still in store for us. From what I've seen so far, Mulder does indeed seem more 'open' about his feelings.

BTW, Dutch television thought it was a good idea to use the closing scene of Triangle as an advert for the new season. So, that was that first thing we saw of S6. What a shock! ;o) I actually didn't believe it was really part of the series. I thought they'd tricked it somehow. Mulder's voice - not dubbed, we have subtitles - sounded different, I thought.

Back to beliefs. What you said about the difference between what his mind says and his heart, and the issue of religion, makes a lot of sense.

It is sometimes hard to understand how people can be sceptic and scientific and at the same time belief in the existence of God without any question or need for proof.

So, IMHO Mulder's reaction is understandable, but despite that it's wrong. Maybe he doesn't mean to, but he's denying Scully what may be an essential part of her freedom, the freedom to experience her religious beliefs the way *she* wants to.

Mat

Well I think Mulder's strong desire to have Scully believe him started with Folie a Deux. He was a bit shook by her comments in that which insinuated he was crazy even though that's not how she meant them. I thik he values her opinion of him so highly that that's the most important thing to him.
And it does continue in season 6 in eps like Triangle and Dreamland.

I have more problems now understanding Mulder's, at times callous, attitude toward Scully's religion considering the great leaps he's willing to take. I used to understnd his view but he goes overboard and should be a little more understanding, I think. He treasures openess so where is his openness with Scully? It's getting a bit hard to discuss this now because oddly this came up again very strongly in our latest Season 7 ep! Mat, are you a bit Clyde Bruckmanish?! How did you know!?

Good to see you here!

det:-)
