I pick up on the point about sticking up for each other, no matter what, as it is really what Scully was getting at in her "It comes down to trust" lines. So maybe she felt sorry for sort of letting him down earlier in the ep. I tend to support and empathise with Mulder more often than with Scully, but that is because I love to try and be inside his head. So, I get mad at her, often, cos *Mulder* gets mad at her. But I still have to admit that Scully's role is a difficult one. 'Wanting to believe' and finding hard evidence are not the same. She can't drop her belief systems like an alien sheds its skin ;)
As for CSM smoking - I totally love that cartoon quality about him, when he *always* lights up when he enters a scene, or he smokes in a quaratine tent or laboratory - or in the operating room (we call them 'theatres' btw). I always grin at the screen whenever he comes on. He's fab!
