Subject: Three little words
In reply to: devlin 's message, "No, Mulder seemed genuine to me at the end" on 16:54:29 01/25/00 Tue

I think, considering the 'garbage' that Mulder had been spouting to Scully and the others, her reaction to his declaration was hardly surprising. We have the benefit of knowing what he had experienced (or dreamed, whatever), Scully knew none of that. She knew only that he was fairly badly injured, had been unconscious for goodness knows how long, and was on a lot of painkilling drugs. The easy conclusion for her to jump to would be 'He's delirious, the drugs have affected his mind'. She'd already told him to shut his eyes and think there's no place like home.

I'm struggling to write where I think the 'Oh brother' came from. Basically, it would have been totally out of character for Scully to collapse in a heap beside him and declare 'Oh Mulder, I've waited so long to hear those words from you. Can it be true? All it took was a bang on the head and an arm full of painkillers for you to tell me that. Take me here! Take me now!' *g* LOL

Nope, that scenario just wouldn't have cut it. She couldn't take him seriously because of the circumstances. As Chantal said, it may have been the right time for *Mulder* to say the words, but really not the time for Scully to take him seriously. And I think his little grin at the end was perfect. He's 'with it' enough to realise that the 'Oh Brother' was Scully's way of saying 'This is not the time or the place' but in a jokey way.

I loved this scene. I'm a shipper, I fully admit that. But I love the ship just the way it is, thank you. Lots of unresolved stuff going on between them, a tiff here and there (the Beginning, Drive) but underneath it all, you can just tell that these two people cannot do without each other. The way they dealt with Mulder's 'I love you' just makes the characters' relationship all the more intriguing to me.

BTW, DDs acting in this scene was fantastic, IMO. :o) And that has nothing to do with how gorgeous he looked with that sheet hanging off him...
