Subject: Too dark to see tongues!

Det – I do like Triangle, but it wasn’t such a great ep, for me. I think it was a triumph of style over content in the end. I go along with your idea that the dream extended to the Scully sequence. Mulder invented a supercharged Scully who took on her bosses in a very direct way, and all for him! I wonder why your ideas were ridiculed? If the FBI bits weren’t also in the dream, the whole thing loses continuity and cohesion and really does become CC’s attempt to impress with shooting techniques.

The darkness was irritating (especially at the Big Kiss moment). Shroud it in darkness and underplay it. Answering your point about what Mulder might expect Scully to do if he kissed her: I think it is a nervous reaction to grin, isn’t it? If you were punched after being bold, you might laugh nervously to cover up any sign that the moment affected you greatly. Laugh it off! Of course, this wasn’t actually Scully and a woman of that era would not have let a man take advantage like that. But if we accept that she is some kind of parallel Scully, well we know Scully can stand her ground and/or retaliate. I think it amused Mulder, too, that this Scully was reacting as any self-respecting woman of 1939 might do.

For all I say it isn’t my favourite episode, I have come away with a strong after shock from the “I love you” moment, which I have written about elsewhere. I took this very seriously and I think it was heeded very much by Scully, too, in her heart of hearts. It was very unexpected too. I had heard about the kiss but not the ILY, so that was a big shock. How brilliant – to hide from a spoiler of that importance for so long.
