Subject: Get ready for my sappy Dreamland post!...

Hi All!

I see in reading your posts that many of you mentioned the sunflower seeds scene in Dreamland. Well last year when this episode (actually it was after the second half) first aired I wrote post just about that scene. I got a lot of nice feedback on it on the Fox boards then and I'd love to hear what any of you might have to add. It's one of the few posts of mine I saved from the old days. Nic actually read this back then but she hadn't seen the episode yet.

Warning: It's rather on the mushy side

I'll await your comments/ridicule!

DII:Discussing the Love Scene

And there sure was one! This episode contained one of the most touching and romantic scenes in TXF since the hospital hallway moment in Momento Mori. And the fact that it contained neither a hug nor a kiss does not diminish it in the slightest.

As it begins we have two people, one of whom is hesitant to deliver the worst of news, and the other with a look of expectance revealing someone who has the utmost confidence that the person in front of him will save him.
Mulder: And how do I get back?

But first she establishes recognition that the person she is speaking to is the one and only person she knows better than any other. It is a familiarity, a comfortable feeling that he is him after spending so much time with a stranger in his likeness.

She presents her bad news and they both realize its full consequences.

Mulder: "I might wind up with my head in a rock."

He is devastated at the ramifications that any attempt to reverse his current situation could prove horrifying and, in the end, futile. And his sadness carries with it the loss of his present life as well as the loss of his present life with her.

They continue to speak very personally about the gentleman a few feet away in the car. She explains her dislike of what he has done to the good character of Fox Mulder. In her mind, Morris acting like a good boy for the FBi is not good, but in fact tarnishes her partner's reputation as she has come to know it. And her partner, tearing up, is angry too.

"I'd kiss you if you weren't so damn ugly."

This is a line from the 1969 movie, Planet of the Apes. The female Ape said it to Charelton Heston's character when they said goodbye. It isn't the first time a line from that movie was used in The X-Files. In War of the Coprophages Mulder and Scully exchanged another Apes reference. In Dreamlnad II, Scully was saying THIS line with intent to slightly lighten the tone of the conversation. She is reacting to Mulder's unwavering support for her position in the Bureau. Perhaps her joke was a reference to the similar joke shared in the past, remembering old times. Or it may also have been a roundabout acknowledgement that the near kiss in Mulder's hallway several months ago is still on her mind. His nodding in agreement could apply to both thoughts.

Morris:"Take a picture, it'll last longer"

Their moment is interrupted by the intruder, they share a joke about his possible demise, like the hundreds of other instances of banter to relieve an intense situation they have shared throughout the years. This type of exchange is theirs and only they share it and understand it. She pats his arm as a gesture of goodbye. Her face is somewhat confused. She knows it's Mulder, but she is touching the stranger's body. He stops her and gives her a handful of sunflower seeds. In the movie Casablanca there was a line of dialog: "We'll always have Paris. Mulder:"We'll always have sunflower seeds?" It represents their history together. A small token. Remember me, reember who we are and all we have been together.

He takes one back from her hand. In the old movies a man would light two cigarettes in his mouth and then hand one to the woman. Considered very romantic in its day I guess. Perhaps this is that scene in reverse. Shortly before I started this I heard a song fromn a few years ago:"Every time you go away, I take a piece of me with you." His retrieval one one seed is a romantic gesture and he also is telling her that they remain connected no matter what. And they will continue to share their lives somehow.

The whole scene is played out slowly and quietly. As often is in their best moments, the most is stated in the silent looks they exchange. Their lack of physical contact also spekas strongly to the characters. The moment is very personal, but the intruder is watching them so they refrain from anything more. But the feelings are strong enough here so that any hug or kiss would have been redundant to the thoughts they express with their eyes.

A wonderful love scene, and the first episode I've seen (and I've seen 'em all) that had me close to tears.
