Subject: Finally: S6 'The Beginning' and not before time!!

Well, I'm so bowled over at seeing a brand new X File that I don't quite know where to begin, so I'll just launch myself in, with my impressions:

I was quite surprised how much Scully took against Mulder, over the sighting and experience of extra-terrestrials. After her experience on the ship and all, she might have been a bit more enthusiastic. I sometimes think she is so concerned about looking a fool and being non-scientific in front of other people that she makes Mulder look foolish all on his own. I know the proof was lacking earlier but it *had* happened to her! Gibson the Mindreader also suggested that she was holding back. The question was where *it* was. Scully said "Where what is?" and Gibson neatly caught her out "You already know. You just don't wanna believe it"
Anyway, that thought aside, I'm so glad they included the movie in "previously on The X Files" and they clearly showed we were meant to go forward after the near kiss. And I liked it that Scully was the one who brought it up again. Her explanation about still trying to be true to her well-held scientific beliefs was valid but she is *that* close to leaping the void between belief and non-belief. Unlike Diana Fowley, who seems to embrace all of Mulder's out there beliefs. When she came up with the theory in the car, about the fact that the alien might need the warmth of the power station to develop, that seemed to make Mulder start. It was like he couldn't believe someone was agreeing with him outright *and* advancing his theory. I could see why someone like her may have taken his fancy in the past! (I know, that was then, this is now!)

The most intense moment, for me, was at the end, when Scully was talking about Fowley to Mulder and she asked him to trust her (Scully). Was there the hint of a misty-moisty eye from Scully? I thought so.

It was a really different sort of episode to 'The End', much more exciting. It was great that it was full of aliens gestating and attacking people. And now we're also treated to the full-on sight of the developed creature, something we hadn't seen much of previously. The continuing mythology offered the scary thought that we are what we are because we have alien DNA in us.

I felt sorry for Mulder, wandering around with his cardboard box of charred X File remnants. So pathetic. And then finding Spender has taken over his office. It seems that Spender couldn't resist CSM's charms. (I have only this episode to go by, of course. He may develop a conscience, unlike his Dad)

So, a very good start! Liked it a lot and it got me all fired up. I also enjoyed the S&M interactions, the Fowley/Mulder, Mulder/Spender and the Mulder/Skinner scenes. All very good. And where would we be without a good old First Elder muttering into his chins, about problems and controlling situations. Vintage!

Must watch it all over again on Saturday, for further ruminations.....
Sooooooooooooooooooooooo glad we're back in the game, fellow BBC-ites!
