Loved the review, dev. It’s funny how different things jump out at different people, isn’t it?

I must admit, this is my second viewing of this ep, although I first saw it way back last summer, so, being a nic of very little brain, it was almost like seeing it for the first time last night.

I was surprised at a lot of the things that both Scully and Mulder did - not just at Scully’s reaction. I’m very confused as to why Mulder didn’t know that Scully wasn’t going to back him up during the meeting. Don’t they talk to each other unless there’s an X-Files camera crew present? ;o) Mulder was obviously stroppy with Scully for not backing him in the big meeting and that did cause me to wonder how much they’ve talked about what went on in the Antarctic - have they spoken at all since their return?

Actually, I liked the fact that Mulder and Scully were scratchy with each other at different points in this ep. The relationships in it are more real than the majority of TV shows ever get close to. Let’s face it, no one is perfect and no one ever reacts perfectly when faced with a problem. Mulder treated Scully off-handedly a couple of times in this ep. Scully obviously hadn’t made it clear to him what she had seen and what she hadn’t.

At the same time, although it seemed to me that Mulder was being a bit of a git towards Scully (moreso than she deserved, IMHO), I can understand why he might have done that. When she kind of referred to the ‘hallway scene’, outside the house in Phoenix, Mulder was unkind - he totally blanked her and didn’t admit that he *does* need her scientific proof. He was speaking from the heart in FTF when he said that her constant drive to get proof had saved him many times. This time around he used the fact that she was opening up to him (as much as Scully ever opens up!) to hit back at her for ‘betraying’ him in the meeting. Not a nice thing to do, no. But a very human thing to do. He’d just been humiliated and let down by the one person he trusts above all others, plus his life’s work (let’s face it, his *life*) had been taken away and given to brown-nose Spender. He was hurting like hell and the human reaction in that situation is to hit back at one of the things that’s causing the hurt - Scully.

Dev, I loved that you picked up that Scully is *so* close to believing now. I think Gibson was right, she *does* believe, but just can’t take that final step of admitting it to herself or to Mulder. I loved Mulder’s little knowing smirk when Gibson said that to her.

The scene at the end where Scully tells Mulder that it’s all a question of trust was a weird. Intense is a great description of it, Dev. I’ve never seen Mulder acting like such a brat. Get over it Mulder!! It seemed to me he was punishing Scully (again) for her earlier ‘betrayal’ and her insistence on proof. But she was right to stick to her guns and keep looking for the physical evidence. Without that, they’re never going to get anyone to believe their ‘Aliens Taking Over the Earth’ story, are they? I can’t blame Scully for looking upset - Mulder was being a spoilt brat. He does tend to ‘forget’ that Scully has just as much invested in the X-Files as he has, doesn’t he?

I didn’t understand why, after Fowley pulled a gun on Mulder at the nuclear plant, he still stuck up for her back at the office. Using her to get at Scully was low, IMHO.

Anyway, moving away from the M/S relationship issues this ep threw up (I’m sure I’ll get back to ‘em again at some stage - there’s so much in this ep!), the mythology took a huge leap, didn’t it?

As per usual when a myth-arc ep appears, I tend to sit there and go with it. If I start questioning what’s going on and trying to make it work with what we’ve seen before I end up in a confused, gibbering heap on the floor!! I just have so many questions that don’t have answers, and this ep just added to the list. :o) I loved the twist at the end when Scully was the one to give Mulder, with proof, an even more ‘out there’ theory than even he’d managed to come up with! We’re *all* extra-terrestrial, in some way. Wow! Plus the fact that the alien we saw in FTF is actually a baby grey! I don't know why, and I don't know what that makes the black oil - some sort of earlier stage in their development, or the final stage? As I said, if I start asking questions, I'll never stop!

In all, I really did like this ep - moreso than the first time I watched it, I think. It wasn’t a comfortable ride, but that’s not the reason I watch TXF. It was a roller coaster ride from start to finish. I loved the scene with Mulder and Skinner (again, M acted like a bit of a brat, I may have to christen him BratBoy for this ep!) and Gibson is fantastic. He’s such a great character, I hope they continue to use him in the myth-arcs. Spender is a little shit, ain’t he. Gotta love that he’s such a slime. I seem to remember after The End the conclusion was that he’d been bullied at school and now he’s got a bit of power he wants to be the bully. That feeling carried on in this ep, but I loved the way Mulder put him down. And Fowley... *blech*. She’s conniving and clever and can twist M around her little finger - should make for some interesting viewing in the coming eps!
