Talking of Gibson – he was very good, I agree. What happened to him at the end of the episode? Is he going to be stuck in the nuclear facility for the duration? It reminded me of Krycek stuck in the missile silo that time. And did the alien not kill him for a purpose? I mean, the boy was certainly ‘next’. I wonder if the alien sensed the alien-ness that Gibson had been infected with so did not choose to kill him.

Interesting that most of you have been more protective of Scully than Mulder, in your individual replies. Like, calling Mulder a ‘brat’ etc. The only time I would agree that Mulder was being unnecessarily cruel was the hand-holding moment when she tried to hark back the HWS in the movie. I still maintain that he manipulated her back then with a strong case for emotional blackmail to be made against him. But he threw this vulnerable moment back in her face, somewhat, in ‘The Beginning’. However, on the general point about ‘betrayal’ (too strong a word?) I think nic is right – had they not discussed what each of them would say to the OPR board? Unless it was last moment self-consciousness that struck Scully. So, I felt more for him at that moment. It seems they are destined never to hold onto the evidence before them!

Another good point that was made – Scully’s life is also in The X Files. She made the point to him again when M was trying to say “I have been ordered not to….” And S said “*We* have been ordered…” So, yes, sometimes he is insensitive. That’s men for you! As to his belief in Fowley. I’m not sure from this that she was not to be trusted. Unless she has another very secret agenda, it may have just been what Mulder said – that she was trying to help him from the inside. The reason she called for help and got the gun on him, was to try and stop the alien attack. Sort of cause a disturbance. The only way to do that was to say that Mulder was not authorised to be there and have him arrested.

The “trust me” scene was significant IMO, because it is probably the only time that Scully has asked Mulder to believe in her just because she wants him to. Asking someone to trust you, makes you a bit vulnerable. It was also important because she was making a special effort to draw him away from Fowley. Quite blatant, I thought. If there is a residual special relationship between Mulder and Fowley, then Scully was more or less asking him not to let her turn his head. As I said, important.

It’s funny saying all these things, knowing that everyone else knows more than we do, but I like to try and understand things as I go along, with the information to hand.

Re the black oil – I understood that to be a carrying medium for the virus, but that virus now turns out to be the life force of the ETs themselves: once infected with the black oil, an alien would grow within you, using your tissue etc to grow its own.

Mulder: “Maybe somebody’s got the flu”
