Mat! Hi. I have been hoping you would log on. It seems like an age since the old forum was up and running and the Old Eps board was buzzing. What do you mean that people are disagreeing with you �especially of late�? Cryptic. Disagreements are part of the whole experience, after all.

The way I have to read Scully�s disbelief is this: she has a very well established mind set, which she has lived by wholeheartedly and has built her career around. It is the certainties of factual evidence that she clings onto, even in the face of some weirdness she has seen. Looking at things from her point of view (I do try, honest!!) I could imagine how agreeing to believe in the �fantastic� or �ephemeral� would be like jumping out of plane without a parachute. Nothing would be totally fixed anymore. The ground beneath her feet which keeps her centred would be gone! Yes, I can understand her holding back, but I can�t bear to see Mulder�s disappointment much more, as she seems to climb down over things.

Yes, you�re right that she came late to the meeting with new evidence so her reluctance may have only just arisen. You mentioned the lack of proof and the cleverness of the writers: quite! They needed some device to keep Scully�s scepticism in place. Otherwise it wouldn�t be TXF. Actually, although I am complaining about Scully, I can also see that there is no programme without that scepticism!

The mythos are my favourites too. They are just a little overwhelming to get your head around. That�s why I like all the other opinions which help me to get a better handle on what I have seen. Nic said she got confused with what was happening with �The Big Picture� but I think even CC would admit that you can take a two-parter as just that � and it will make a sense all of its own. It is too troubling to get the whole thing steadfast in your mind because it takes one person to question a held belief and you can be sent whirling into confusion again.
