My theory is that if people went to see the movie, they were more than used to seeing the aliens behave in this way. It was adirect follow on, after all. (I so loved the "previously" reference, as I said!) And once again, it is the violence of the non-seen: the imaginary put-the-gory-scene-together-in-your-head sort of thing. I think people may equate blood with violence but we never saw what the alien did to the guy in the nuclear plant. Blood suggested it! (And Mulder's disturbed face!)
