At the time the baby was born, she was legally married to one man, but living with another. Unless the laws are different in England than they are in the U.S., that meant her husband was the *legal* father of the baby and his name had to go on the birth certificate. But from the way everybody was behaving, the assumption most people made was that her new boyfriend was the baby's actual, biological father. Or, possibly, she truly didn't know which one it was and was waiting 'til after the baby was born to have paternity tests to determine which man it was.
