After carefully reviewing the scene in question with freeze frame and slow motion I can say without a doubt that there was no smoke. It was just the way that light and shadow were passing as they drove.
Besides, as a former smoker I can tell you, if you smoke in a car with the windows up there will be smoke everywhere.
