It will be the 60th anniversary of the formation of The Rolling Stones in 2022. It will be a welcome thing if the celebration includes acknowledgement of everyone who has been an important part of the history of the band. It should include the contributions of Brian Jones, Bill Wyman Mick Taylor and Charlie Watts. It would be complete if they also acknowledge Ian Stewart, Dick Taylor and Nicky Hopkins. They were all important people who contributed to the band at different times in their history.

It amazes me how many people who became Stones fans after the Brian era don,t even know who he was. The guy just doesn,t get the recognition or credit he deserves. Every now and then I take a trip back to memory lane seeing the pictures of Brian, the interviews, listening to his music. There is a lot out there if you look.

I had a dream Wednesday night. Brian was wearing his white hat and speaking to me. I couldn't hear him clearly, and he looked frustrated. In the morning I went to work, and as I tried to do my daily tasks these words kept coming into my head. I couldn't keep them away, and they interfered with my concentration, so I wrote them down. Maybe this is a few days late, but Gerry Seda, founder and friend of all on this board, passed away SIX YEARS AGO on Sept 20, 2010 after a long illness. I never met Gerry, but had many in-depth conversations on this board about, [of course], our favorite Stone, Brian. Gerry was one of the most level headed, yet passionate people I've ever heard, again, yes only on the 'net, and it is my profound loss that we never met in person.
I wonder if we had. I used to hang around in Greenwich Village New York quite extensively in the late '60s and very early '70s promoting my musical career, undoubtedly, at some of the same haunts Gerry must've been. Something I guess I'll never know.
In any event, take a moment out of your day to remember this lovely woman who, arguably, was Brian's biggest fan.
Rest In Peace, dear Gerry.

The Rolling Stones definitely gave Brian a hard time for taking more money and for being the most talented and the most artistic. They've said in interviews that he set himself up to get treated like shit (for being a gentle/jealous guy in a band of outgoing party guys) and that's exactly what the band did to him, treat him like shit. That's (in my opinion) why he started abusing drugs which eventually led to his the downfall of his character and motivation. The rest of the band didn't like him and they used evil ways to get rid of him. As for his death, it's sketchy that nobody tried to solve it. If he was murdered, then who was behind it? The band? His house workers? Nobody knows. On the other hand, if he commuted suicide, then it was a byproduct of the bands resentment and torture towards him. Either way, the Rolling Stones have a dark history hidden away, somebody needs to do something about it. would highly suggest that yall do some research because this shit is so convoluted!

I find it almost miraculous that This board has been Kept Going for so Long. This was the first place I found on my Computer in 1999 and It was Gerry Seda who welcmed me to Cyberspace..I still wear My Brian hairstyle even though its going gray And I stiill love all my Stones Friends going back to 1970 when a friend of mine let me play his Gibson Firebird and taught me Gimme Shelter and Midnight Rambler..this is still one of my favorite places and I thank all the brian Fans and his family for being so nice to me. His Rolling Stones are really good people and still a tribute to his legacy ..i will continue to return and hope you are all happy and in good Health. HUH??
Many of you may not know that name. But Mr. Vilmont recently portrayed the role of 'Ernst' in the now-canceled HBO series "Vinyl". Ernst was supposedly based on Austrian photographer Ernst Haas, who was known to hang with Andy Warhol in the '60s. But.......... WHY was Ernst made up to look EXACTLY LIKE BRIAN JONES....who of course was ALSO friends with Warhol at this time. Of course, Brian, er, ahhh, I mean.. ERNST.. was killed off early on in the series. Was executive producer Mick Jagger trying to exorcise some long held demons here?
I would really like some input from my fellow Brian-fans.
BTW If you haven't seen the series, Google Carrington Vilmont/Vinyl and you'll see the spitting image of a young, leather-jacket clad Brian - MUCH more so than that guy with the big nose who played Brian in 'Stoned'
I was absolutely fascinated when I saw it, and Mr. Vilmont even affected some of Brian's unique mannerisms and speech. Obviously, not a coincidence- but I'm puzzled as to what was going on here. Thoughts, anyone?.

What do you think the best book about Brian and his life has been? I personally think the most detailed, particularly about his early life, and which tries to be the most fair is Paul Trynka's Sympathy for the Devil. It neither deifies him nor demonises or sensationalises him or his life or legacy.

Not much info on this one, but good old Tom Keylock is being named as Brian's killer in this one. Keep in mind that this is a Geoffrey Guiliano project and in the past, he's named other people involved and/or responsible for Brian's demise. Of course, we all remember that Mr. Guiliano is the one that released the 'Rock Reports' audio tape that supposedly interviewed one "Marty" (voiced disguised by helium) the builder confessing to drowning Brian. One thing that I did find interesting is that there is a link to the official Facebook page for this movie and there is an interesting audio interview/interviews with both Brian and Mick circa 1968. There is also a Youtube video that is inaccessible to folks in the USA, which looks like it may name Princess Margaret as a witness of some sort. If any UK readers still left here can view it, kindly share the contents of the video with us.

Brian Clough and Brian Jones.
Although on the face of it they had nothing in common, if you look closer they had a great deal and many coincidences occur between their lives.
BOTH lost a sister in early childhood. Jones's sister died of Leukemia at the age of two and Clough's sister died of Septicemia at the age of four.
BOTH had a middle name beginning with H (Howard and Hopkin).
BOTH were rebellious figures.
BOTH were intelligent and articulate.
BOTH were very talented in their sphere. Clough scored 251 goals in 274 league games and won two league titles, with two different clubs, league cups and European cups twice. Clough was also a very good cricketer. Jones was academically gifted, a good spin bowler, a brilliant swimmer, a brilliant diver, and could play any musical instrument with ease.
BOTH, despite their talented, reached their limitations at the top. Clough didn't achieve anything when he played for England and nearly all of his goals were in the second division. He was turned down for the England job and never managed to win the FA Cup. Jones couldn't sing or write songs and eventually ended up sidelined by the Rolling Stones.
BOTH had addiction problems. Clough was an alcoholic. Jones with alcohol and drugs.
BOTH had issues with violence. Clough with hitting fans and even the odd player. Jones with women.
BOTH fell out with people who worked with and were once close to them. Clough with Taylor. Jones with Richards.
BOTH had statues put up of them in their hometown. Clough in Middlesborough. Jones in Cheltenham.
BOTH made their fame and fortune mainly away from their hometown. Clough in Sunderland, then Derby and Nottingham. Jones in London.
BOTH had prejudice problems. Clough was homophobic. Jones misogynistic.
BOTH displayed and were said to very kind and very cruel.
BOTH were described in similar ways. Clough as the quare fellow. You don't know which will come through the door. He can be kind and gentle or rude and obnoxious. Another described Clough as having at least five different personalities. He was also described as unpredictable and being opposites all the time. Jones was described as unpredictable, having a changeable, almost split personality, being a bunch of guys, opposites all the time, and the sweetest, softest most considerate man in the world and the nastiest piece of work you will ever met.
BOTH loved being recognised and the center of attention.
BOTH could be unreliable. Clough turning up for things late and Jones doing the same or not at all.
BOTH antagonised people they worked with. Clough his team-mates and Jones his bandmates.
BOTH were charismatic characters who many people idolised and wanted to be.
BOTH had films made about them. The Damned United and Stoned.
BOTH were controversial characters.

Not for nothing, but this space has come to a dead standstill since Trynkas book. So what if he worked for MOJO? So what if he wrote about Bowie? I cant stand Bowie! I had to throw that book away just to get in touch with my own Feelings about Brian, Mick and Keith again, not just as a fan but as a musician. I believe in at least trying to keep things on the up and up when It comes to MY ROLLING STONES!!! theres only one Rolling Stones and this has included many people over the years,and I really dont think they have perverse personalities at all and arent difficult to work with but now it seems everybody is writing their "Stones Memoirs". Id rather look at and listen to them than read all sorts of dry articles and books about them from all sorts of people who are out to "GET THEM" out of jealousy and frustration because theyre NOT THEM.Im going to turn them on, turn them up and have a good time. I know it is from last November, but this belongs here. Very interesting to note what the Stone's accountant says about Brian and songwriting credits.
Brian Jones is to the Rolling Stones what Leon Trotsky was to the Russian Revolution: organizer, ideologist and victim of a power struggle. Jones founded the group, gave it its name and recruited the schoolboys Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, who then marginalized him, eventually expelling him from the band. Since his death in 1969, a month after he was forced out, Jones has largely been airbrushed from the group’s history.
Paul Trynka’s biography “Brian Jones: The Making of the Rolling Stones” challenges the standard version of events, focused on Mr. Jagger and Mr. Richards, in favor of something far more nuanced. Though Mr. Trynka sometimes overstates Jones’s long-term cultural impact, his is revisionist history of the best kind — scrupulously researched and cogently argued — and should be unfailingly interesting to any Stones fan.
Specifically, “Brian Jones” seems designed as a corrective to “Life,” Keith Richards’s 2010 memoir. Mr. Trynka, the author of biographies of David Bowie and Iggy Pop, and a former editor of the British music magazines Mojo and Guitar, has interviewed Mr. Richards several times over the years and obviously likes him, but also considers his memory of events highly unreliable.
“History is written by the victors, and in recent years we’ve seen the proprietors of the modern Rolling Stones describe their genesis, their discovery of the blues, without even mentioning their founder,” Mr. Trynka remarks in the introduction. Without naming Mr. Richards, he also expresses his distaste for an assessment that appears in “Life,” that Brian Jones was “a kind of rotting attachment.”
The portrait of Jones that Mr. Trynka offers here is bifurcated. Though he is impressed with Jones’s “disciplined, honed sense of musical direction” and his dexterity on guitar and many other instruments, he does not hesitate to point out his subject’s more unpleasant personality traits: He was narcissistic, manipulative, misogynistic, conniving and dishonest about money. It’s not accidental that this book is called “Sympathy for the Devil” in Britain.
Mr. Trynka attributes Jones’s downfall to a conjunction of factors, some related to those character flaws but others external to him. Much has been written about the drug busts that swept up Mr. Jagger and Mr. Richards in the mid-1960s and their court battles, though Jones seems to have been even more of a target, because he was such a dandy and so successful with women.
But as Mr. Trynka tells it, Jones did not receive strong legal advice or fight charges as hard or as successfully as the Jagger-Richards team. After his first arrest, he pleaded guilty, which drove a wedge between him and other band members, who feared it would mean they could no longer tour abroad, all of which left him feeling crushed, isolated and vulnerable. That, in turn, increased his consumption of drugs and alcohol and made him less productive as a musician.
Nevertheless, Mr. Trynka demonstrates convincingly that the original Rolling Stones were Jones’s band and reflected his look, tastes and interests, not just the blues but also renaissance music and what today would be called world music. (He recorded the master musicians of Joujouka in the mountains of Morocco.) In “Life,” Mr. Richards describes his discovery of the blues-tinged open G guitar tuning, familiar from hits like “Honky Tonk Women” and “Start Me Up,” as life changing, and says it came to him via Ry Cooder in the late 1960s. But Mr. Trynka notes that Jones often played in that tuning from the band’s earliest days and quotes Dick Taylor, an original member of the Stones, as saying, “Keith watched Brian play that tuning, and certainly knew all about it.”
Some of Mr. Trynka’s account is not new, having appeared in “Stone Alone,” the often overlooked 1990 memoir of the Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman, or other books written by band outsiders. What makes Mr. Trynka’s book fresh and interesting, and gives it credibility, is the length he has gone to find witnesses to corroborate and elaborate on those stories.
It’s not just that Mr. Trynka has sought out those who worked with the band on the creative side, such as the singer Marianne Faithfull, the arranger Jack Nitzsche and the recording engineers Eddie Kramer, Glyn Johns and George Chkiantz. He has also interviewed those with more of a worm’s-eye view: drivers, roadies, office staff, old girlfriends and former roommates like James Phelge, whose surname the band would appropriate to designate songs that were group compositions rather than Jagger-Richard numbers.
“Brian Jones was the main man in the Stones; Jagger got everything from him,” the drummer Ginger Baker, who played in the band at some of its earliest shows and went on to become famous as a member of Cream, says in the book. “Brian was much more of a musician than Jagger will ever be — although Jagger’s a great economist.”
Citing those present at the creation, Mr. Trynka contends that Jones had a hand in composing some well-known Stones tracks, including “Paint It, Black” and “Under My Thumb.” He also claims that “Ruby Tuesday,” a No. 1 hit early in 1967, is actually a Jones-Richards collaboration — written not by Mr. Richards in a burst of inspiration and heartbreak in a Los Angeles hotel room, which is how the story is told in “Life” and elsewhere, but, according to Ms. Faithfull and Mr. Kramer, “labored over” by the pair in London for weeks.
“I used to say to Brian, ‘What on earth are you doing?’ ” Stan Blackbourne, the accountant for the Rolling Stones at their mid-1960s peak, recalls in the book. “ ‘You write some of these songs, and you give the name over as if Mick Jagger has done it. Do you understand, you’re giving ’em thousands of pounds!’ All the time I used to tell him, ‘You’re writing a blank check.’ ”
Mr. Trynka also looks into the circumstances of Jones’s death, on July 3, 1969, in the swimming pool at his home in East Sussex, once owned by A. A. Milne, but after all the Sturm und Drang that has come before, the subject is somewhat anticlimactic. In numerous books and in films like “Stoned,” it has been suggested that Jones was murdered, but Mr. Trynka painstakingly examines the flaws in each of the theories, and ends up close to the official verdict, “death by misadventure,” because of drug and alcohol consumption.
“The official coroner’s verdict on Brian’s death was perfunctory and lazy,” Mr. Trynka concludes. Nonetheless, “I’ve come to share their belief that Brian’s death was most likely a tragic accident” and to believe that “many of the existing theories that his death was in fact murder rely on unreliable witnesses.”
In the end, with the advantage of 45 years’ perspective, Mr. Trynka maintains, it is Jones’s music that matters. “It’s understandable why the survivors resent Brian Jones beyond the grave,” given his founder’s role, he argues, and also writes: “Brian Jones got many things wrong in his life, but the most important thing he got right.”

Hi All!!
Another new Book (Glyn Johns) is out that covers our Brian and The Rolling Stones (along with many other artists including The Beatles, Led Zepplin and many many more famous bands). I saw it yesterday at Barnes & Noble Book Store and did a quick glance through the book.
I would strongly suggest buying the book. It looks very good. Although, Glyn Johns does not put Brian in the "great guy" category. As most of you know, Glyn Johns was the Recording Engineer for the Stones and actually recorded the Stones very first Demo Record when Brian was obviously the leader of the Stones (back in 1963). For that little story alone it's worth the price of the book but there are some real cool bands that he recorded and he tells a great story from what I read.
Just an FYI, I did not know Glyn Johns was best friends with Ian Stewart of the Stones either. He mentions "Stu" quite a bit and takes the same attitude towards Brian that "Stu" did... again a genuine dislike but at the same time great admiration for Brian's Musical talents.
Glyn Johns also goes into detail about the abuse Brian took from Keith and Mick. So with these last two books a couple of "Big Pieces" of the puzzle have fit quite nicely. A new perspective on the Brian versus Mick and Keith story/narrative. Unfortunately, it's not a happy story and very sad (from what I read).
I definitely plan on buying the book, though. Hope everyone has a wonderful Holiday Season. Merry Christmas too!!

In Brian Jones: The Making of the Rolling Stones (Viking), Trynka – the author of biographies of David Bowie and Iggy Pop, as well as the collection of oral histories, Portrait of the Blues – shines a light on Jones and his foundational role in bringing American blues music to England, forming and initially leading The Rolling Stones, and driving their sound with his command of the blues and willingness to experiment with instruments such as the sitar, dulcimer, recorder, marimbas, and slide guitar.
Trynka’s book is the first of its kind because it corrects many misconceptions about the first decade of The Stones. It’s a controversial read, and one of the best rock biographies we’ve ever read. Stereo Embers‘ review of the book will appear tomorrow (October 9, 2014).
We were honored to sit down with Trynka and chat with him about his book, Brian Jones, and The Stones in general.
SE: Thanks, Paul, for chatting with us today. When I received my copy of your new book, Brian Jones: The Making of the Rolling Stones, I was very excited to see that – finally! – Brian had received the full-length biography he deserved. What was your inspiration for writing the book?
PT: I’d always been interested in Brian. Then, I guess the spur was reading Keith’s Life. It was so disappointing – so curmudgeonly, so callous. He damned Brian so much that it had the opposite of the intended effect; it made me realize how central Brian was. The book’s also so inaccurate – he doesn’t even remember who played drums on his first gig! So I also wanted a book that would depict The Stones’ first days accurately.
SE: What was the first Stones’ song you remember hearing and why did it draw you to the band?
PT: My sister used to play lots of Beatles, Animals, and Stones when I was a kid. I can remember liking that early blues stuff even then, for some reason, especially that magnificent debut album. Even when I started out finding my own music during the punk era, I still loved that album. It is kind of punk, and one of the most perfect debut albums ever, alongside Patti Smith’s Horses.
SE: Your subtitle intrigued me. Why did you choose “The Making of the Rolling Stones”?
PT: Well, it is about the making of The Rolling Stones.We have an English phrase saying “someone was the making of something,” and he was. We did discuss having the subtitle as “The making of the Rolling Stones and the Unmaking of Brian Jones,” but I was the only person who liked the word “unmaking”… and of course it’s way too clunky for a book jacket. But it’s the making of the band – the unique, thrilling way they came together, which I think has never been properly investigated before.
SE: Would you please talk about Brian’s pioneering role in bringing American blues music to England in the early 1960s?
PT: My thesis is that Brian was the one: the only one who saw American blues as youth music. Other people, Alexis Korner, even Mick and Keith, saw blues as a kind of cool, hobby, coffee table music. Brian saw it as something that kids would take up, youth music. He also thought it would make him famous and give his life meaning. He was absolutely and completely vindicated – but he paid a terrible price.
SE: In the early days – before The Stones released their first single, “Come On” – was Brian interested in American rock ‘n’ roll as much as Mick Jagger and Keith Richards or John Lennon and Paul McCartney?
PT: Brian was eclectic, liked Little Richard and Johnny Cash, played Duane Eddy songs in one of his many bands, The Ramrods, as well as Chuck Berry material. I don’t feel he was as fixated with Buddy Holly as Mick Jagger was, and he was definitely more interested in then-obscure blues, like Robert Johnson, but he seemed to have enjoyed a wider range of music and had definitely played a much wider range than any of the others.
SE: Stones’ records like Aftermath, Between the Buttons, and Their Satanic Majesties Request indicate Brian’s experimental tendencies as a musician. Would you speak to Brian’s equally experimental approach to building his own amplifier to get the sounds he wanted out of his slide guitar?
PT: Brian was fixated on sound, tone color. He’d already spotted the distortion potential of valve amps in 1962 – in typical fashion, he persuaded his mate John Keen to buy an AC15 , so he could play glassy, distorted guitar, just like Elmore James. He also modified a tape recorder, probably using some sort of pre-amp, to get a lo fi sound, either by accident or design.
SE: Another experimental aspect of Brian’s work was his understanding of alternate guitar tunings, which he learned from American blues artists. What were these tunings and did he use them on any Stones’ records?
PT: Brian seemed to have worked out all of the major blues tunings by the end of 1961 or so. He used Open E as his main tuning, but was also playing Open G in 1962 – you can hear him use the tuning on their version of “I Can’t Be Satisfied.” He also uses Open A, which is essentially the same, except one tone up, on “No Expectations,” recorded in 1968. Keith says he learned the tuning from Ry Cooder, in 1969.
SE: You taught me that The Stones’ story is really a collection of historical narratives that don’t necessarily jive with each other, especially when it comes to Brian’s role as the founder and initial leader of the band. How do the Mick Jagger and Keith Richards’ narratives differ from yours?
PT: Mick and Keith have fashioned a new version of the band’s founding story, where they formed the band, and Brian was just a guitarist; look at the bio on their website. Of course, Brian named the band, he placed the ads for musicians, he appointed the band members – it was he who asked Dick Taylor to join on bass, not Dick’s mates, Mick or Keith. In Life, Keith describes Brian as a “kind of rotten appendage.” They’re in denial; it’s a combination of jealousy and guilt, I presume. Brian could be a pain, but he was the band’s mojo. Remember, Mick Taylor only played on one great post-Brian album, Exile on Main St.. They needed Brian to push them, because Mick and Keith are much more conservative musicians. They are wonderful musicians, of course – a shame they’re not secure enough to credit the man who taught them so much.
SE: When Andrew Loog Oldham started managing the band, why did Brian become the odd man out?
PT: It was a straightforward power struggle: divide and rule. Andrew liked Mick the best, partly because – according to Tony Calder – he fancied him the most. Mick was his creature, and this helped cement Andrew’s hold over the band. In many ways it was cynical and manipulative – but remember, these guys, Andrew included, were kids, surfing an immense wave, a phenomenon no-one could control or really comprehend.
SE: I watched Charlie Is My Darling the other night – and, in the film, Brian is magnetic. He truly stands out from the other Stones. Do you agree? And, if so, what makes him so appealing and charismatic?
PT: The combination of the blond, angelic look, and a deepness – or else darkness. He’s a deep thinker, who has musical insight. He also loved chaos… some people think he was the personification of the God Pan, from whom the word “panic” came, and you can see why. Andrew Oldham maintains in his book, by the way, that the sequence makes Brian look like a prat.
SE: You argue very compellingly that Brian had a lot to do with the composition of tracks like “Paint It Black” and “Ruby Tuesday.” Are there any other songs to which Brian contributed but didn’t get the credit he deserved?
PT: There are so many Jagger and Richards’ jams that weren’t really songs until he transformed them. “Under My Thumb,” which was hot-wired by him and Jack Nitzsche, another guy who rarely gets credit (he didn’t get paid, either); and “The Last Time,” which is a Staple Singers’ song with a new guitar riff by Brian. There are many more. I’d love to know more about “Play with Fire,” which was originally credited to Nanker-Phelge, the group credit, and I was told he came up with the the harpsichord part… someone has apparently since changed the credit to Jagger-Richards.
SE: Why didn’t Brian write his own material for The Stones?
PT: He needed a songwriting partner. If he’d been less insecure, he should have found himself one. Those who worked on his soundtrack for A Degree of Murder agree he was perfectly capable of writing; he just needed a supportive environment. It’s worth pointing out, though, that he did lack a certain artistic brutality – that ability to say “that’s good enough” and finish a song. He’d never be satisfied. That was his biggest problem.
SE: Would you discuss what other great musicians – folks like The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Ginger Baker, and Pete Townshend – thought of Brian?
PT: The simplest summation is probably Pete Townshend’s statement, this is from memory, that he was “A good guy. Really.” He did also add that Brian was living on a higher plane of decadence than anyone he’d ever met, which is another good summation! It’s striking how outsiders liked him and thought him a very different person from the one you’ll see described by Mick and Keith.
SE: Would you talk about Brian’s interest in what we consider today to be “world music”?
PT: Brian had always been eclectic; he was the first Stone, and quite plausibly the first major British rock musician, to investigate world music in general, and Moroccan music in particular. It was a continuation of the journey he’d started discovering Robert Johnson in late 1961. He had a very coherent plan to incorporate it into The Stones’ music, and he also went out to Joujouka to record the musicians in what is an absolutely pioneering world music album. His love of world music is exactly like his love of blues in that other people initially thought both were strange, esoteric, dinner party musisc that would never be mainstream. Brian was a visionary, who foretold much of today’s cultural landscape. A flawed visionary.
SE: In the book, Brian comes across as a very isolated figure – and he becomes more and more isolated as time goes on. How do you explain this?
PT: The Stones were, people agree, always a pretty nasty band. It’s quite disturbing being around them even now and sensing the dysfunctional atmosphere – there’s Mick’s camp, and Keith’s camp, like two rival factions at a royal court. But in 1966 you had both of them, for much of the time, focusing on Brian as a rival, rather than on each other. I doubt any single person could have withstood it; and his tactics for withstanding it, blotting out the conflicts with drugs, made it worse. Then, as the police chased him, Allen Klein told him and Oldham to avoid the rest of the band. More divide and rule.
SE: What were the causes of Brian’s early death, at the age of 27?
PT: If you’re talking about murder conspiracies, I find them unconvincing; most of them seem flakier than the obviously rushed, peremptory official verdict. But I believe the authorities do bear the heaviest responsibility for his death; they persecuted him, made his life a misery, and further isolated him. Remember, this was all for possession of a tiny piece of hash, something that’s not even a crime in California now. As his friend, Stash, put it, “the establishment killed Brian.” Not by bumping him off ’cause he was shagging Princess Margaret (which people have told me), but by spotting he was the real butterfly they could crush on their wheel.
SE: Finally, if you had to pick three albums and/or tracks that best demonstrate Brian’s contribution to The Stones, what would they be?
PT: I’d go for “I Wanna Be Your Man” – it’s pure punk, a fascinating glimpse of how The Stones sounded before Andrew Oldham, with his Phil Spector obsession, tidied them up. The whole of the first album is wonderful, one of the greatest, most energetic debut albums of all time. I’d choose “Ruby Tuesday” – everything about it, the piano, the recorder, transcends its chaotic era; it’s absolutely permeated with Brian’s sensitive, fragile spirit. Then I’d close with “No Expectations” – of course, it’s a beautiful vocal by Mick, but we can hear, even in the very last days, how Brian dominates and helps define the band’s sound. The police busted him again a day or two after the recording.

Hi All!!
Okay I suppose all or most of you know the story of Brian Keith and Anita leaving (driving in Keith's Limo "the Blue Lena") for Morocco on the ill fated trip that changed not only Brian's life but Anita/Keith's as well. The dynamics in the Band changed permanantly. So many things changed after that trip!! Brian never recovered in my opinion. Was it because Brian lost the love of his life, Anita? Or did Brian feel abondoned/betrayed by the Stones (Keith and Mick)? I suppose I should say only say Keith and not Mick because it was Keith who stole (he says recued) Anita away from Brian. Whatever, Keith (asshole)... the slippery slope was greased and it was a long, long ride to the bottom for Brian regardless.
My opinion is both. Brian loved Anita and lost her to his "best friend" in Brian's band. So after only a few weeks time, from the beginning of their journey leaving one day before Brian's Birthday (February 28, 1967), to Brian's lonely trip back to London (I do mean lonely), Brian not only lost his band (symbolically with his friends deserting him at the Hotel with no money, credit cards etc...) but his girlfriend (love of his life) and best friend!! A tragic, bitter tale that is unfortunate (for Brian).
So Brian gets back to London and then has to face his band mates and go on a tour with the same guy who betrayed him!! Why did Brian not leave the band right there and then??!! I know I would have. With a special Middle Finger salute to Keith (not meant to say he was number one either)!! There is no way in hell I would have gone on that tour. Why did Brian do it??
So let's open up the dialogue and discuss. Look forward to the opinions... all I know is Brian was screwed every which way to Sunday that fateful late February 1967. It was Brian's (like Caesar in Rome) Ides of March. Someone should have warned Brian to beware of close friends and keep his enemies closer!!

Hello. all my Brian Friends! My sister and I flew over here last week for a surprise party for my Cousin Catherine that her Daughter threw for her. It was a huge success and Catherine and the whole family had a great time. I was up at Woodstock the week before last and Thought of you again when I saw that little film of the Stones That was posted here a few months ago..Its very nice to see my family, and the country, Scotland is very beautiful..This is where my mother is from. There are many musicians in my family; all of them better than me at it!! Theyve shamed me into wanting to practice when I get home, which is a good thing. I know it is old news but I don't believe it was ever posted here. I saw on a Stones message board where a few people posted that Brian's mother had passed away back in November 2011. I think she may have passed in either Redruth,Cornwall or Devon.
If anyone knows anything more please share.

Do you realize something? Looks like we'll all have our answer as to how our hero, Brian, expired! For those too lazy to click the link, here is the book description:

The nice thing about this e-book is that it is only an estimated(?) 45 pages long, no sense of having 200+ pages of words and sentences and stuff hogging all that file space!
When I "previewed" the book, all that can be seen is the cover, title page, disclaimer, table of contents and maybe three or four short introductory paragraphs with no mention of Brian Jones. I was intrigued by the chapter's titles, particularly Chapter 5. Contact and Chapter 7. We Get A Response. It makes me wonder if Mary Hallet's end table was used to contact Brian for this interview?
I did find the disclaimer notice highly entertaining, especially where it said that the book was (pay attention here Delilah) "presented solely for motivational and informational purposes only". Being entertained isn't one of those purposes listed, so anyone looking for enjoyment or entertainment from this book should steer clear.
I wonder if the author is aware that the whole "interview with Brian from beyond the grave then write a book" fiasco had already been done by that kook 'whatshername back in 2007? Regardless, it is refreshing to see that being dead for almost 45 years hasn't prevented Brian from doing interviews to inform us all how he was killed. Kudos to whoever Brian's publicist may be.
I don't think I'll ever read this, but I have to admit that this has become my new favorite Brian book.

I see no reason to drag Brian or his Stones and everybody else connected with them trough the mud! For the better, The Rolling Stones ARE the Ultimate Rock and Roll band,and I used to get very jealous of them because Im just not in their league, but now that I will be 61 on July 31, I realize I have indeed gotten a lot of good breaks, did learn to play good guitar by figuring out Stones songs like many of my friends and contemporaries and after years of illness which is just my lot in life, I HAVE survived and cant be anyone but me thats all ANYONE can do, Rich or poor,or regardless of race or circumstance..I still have a lot in common with Brian Jones, and Mick Jagger,and am very happy and content,and if fucked up things happen, you can only try to correct them .Shit happens.so I just want to apologize to anyone I may offend, and most people are glad to hear me play not only my own songs for them But as many Stones songs as I can remember..I need my family and friends,and this little space is full of people I consider cyberfriends..Im just glad I still have my left leg and my head is clear. I've been meaning to post about this for years but until now, never did, probably for good reason...
In Tony Sanchez's book 'Up And Down With The Rolling Stones', Spanish Tony mentioned that Brian once showed him his "witches tit", a.k.a. a supernumerary nipple which supposedly was on Brian's thigh. I've never seen this mentioned or discussed anywhere except for Sanchez's book. I'm not sure what there is to discuss on this topic, a quick Google shows that this occurs 1 in 18 men and 1 in 50 women. Perhaps Dawn Molloy or possibly Old Spice could confirm this fact, not that I am seeking confirmation here, but I think by now just about every other possible Brian Jones topic has been covered and discussed. This one's pretty out there. Any thoughts?

I am really amazed at this! Who would want a harmless little site about A beloved rockstar to disappear? Brian Jones may not have been the most innocent man, nor any of the Rolling Stones, but Brians fans dont deserve to lose touch with one another. Yesterday Morning I heard on the radio That Mick Jaggers most recent ex-girlriend committed suicide. they apprently broke up and her Corporation failed. This reminds me of how Marianne Faithfull attempted suicide many years ago but survived. I feel very sorry for her. I dont know exactly what to say, but Ill try. Once there were a number of Brian Jones fan clubs, even before the internet, Roxanne (nee Roseanne) Fontana had one in the 1970's..I joined one connected with this board in 1999..As a matter of fact, the first person I ever looked up on the internet when got a computer was Brian. I also belonged to Trevor's fan club and looked forward to recieving "The Spirit" in the mail..I realize Im eccentric and perhaps not as stable as Id like to be,so If I put anybody off Im really sorry. I just suppose Brians generation of fans is aging and perhaps doesnt care that much any more, but I think its a real shame that so many people have kept Brian living in peoples memories and didnt get anything for all their efforts. I just hope that many years from now, when The Rolling Stones roll on, that Brian will be remembered as well as Keith and Mick,or perhaps this is just wishful thinking,and no one's love for Brian will be in vain love and Peace, Bernard

According to this book, it would seem that Linda Lawrence is now a member of his team. I wonder if Trevor, Linda, and Pat Andrews get together to mull over the dossier into the wee hours of the morning?
One thing I've noticed over the last 4+ years is, the word "investigation" is now taboo in in the fan club circle. The new operative word is "research", as if there never was an investigation at all. He wasn't investigating, he was researching. As a matter of fact, on the fan club web page, the 'Investigation' button where you could click on and be taken to a link with news and updates from what was then called, the "investigation" has been disabled for the last couple years.
I have more opinions on this whole "research" crap, but I'll put the coal rake down for now.
