I'll tell you what I remember: Josh's father was a Grimm, but he either hadn't inherited that power or it hasn't manifested itself in him yet (it seems to occur at different ages for different people, and later for men than women; Truble has apparently been a Grimm since early adolescence, whereas Nick didn't become one 'til his late 20s). Josh never really understood or believed why his father was running around the country doing crazy things, but his father's dying wish was that Josh take him to Portland to meet Nick and Truble (I don't think they ever said how he knew there were other Grimms living there; possibly Nick's Mom had told him) and Josh did so. He met Nick and Truble and finally came to accept that his father wasn't crazy. So Josh knows all about Grimms and Vessen and stuff; but he isn't one himself.
