Subject: TV season round up

So thanks to DVR, I actually got to watch TV this past season. No more catching up en mass after the fact. I stuck with mostly genre shows:

Arrow: In it's third season and still going strong. Perhaps not as great as it's second season but still very enjoyable. Yes, since it's on CW, a bit on the soapy side. And gets grim at times. At this point, all of Oliver's friends and family know his ID and are part of his team. They depicted a major Batman villain this year as the big bad which was neat but I was underwhelmed by the portrayal. They gave us another super hero in the Atom with him being in another spin off show coming out next year.

The Flash: In it's debut season, this is a super hero show that's much lighter than the others. Comics went for grim and gritty back in the 80s and in some ways lost the good old fashioned fun of it all. Sure, Flash has elements like a tragic past and very dangerous villains but the general atmosphere is that Barry loves being the Flash & his supporting cast enjoy helping him (well all but one). The show came up with a science experiment gone wrong zapping an unknown amount of people in the city & giving them each different powers, gets the ball rolling right off. The cliffhanger makes me think time is going to be affected so who knows how it will be next season.

Agents of SHIELD: Most gave up on this show last year and while it's not great, it's been vastly improved. Tough when you can't change much universe wise as it would impact on the Marvel films. They added more characters, had one cast member develop super powers, kept a traitor from last year around without redeeming him, added new villains also with powers including an OTT performance by Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks). Plenty went down and seems to have concluded at the finale. The set up for next season sounds promising.

Agent Carter: The mid-season break for Agents of SHIELD gave us the 8 episode Agent Carter, taking place in the 40s just after the war and starring Hayley Atwell reprising her role from the first Captain America film. Plenty of references to that film & to Marvel history. Tony Stark's father appears. A mystery unfolds that Peggy must solve on her own as her new boss & co-workers don't think a woman can do the job. They think she was just Captain America's girlfriend & not a capable agent. The short run time allowed this show to get to the point and not drag things out like AOS sometimes does. Returning next year for a 10 episode arc in LA instead of NYC.

Better Call Saul: The Breaking bad spin off tells the story of Saul Goodman AKA James McGill, the crooked lawyer. Lots of background, his brother who's a brilliant lawyer but has a phobia, the law firm he worked for but now is rivals with, his con man past & how he falls back into the mode as a lawyer, run ins with the criminal element including familiar faces from BB. We also get crooked cop turned gun for hire Mike Ehrmantraut's back story as well. Really liked the performances and look forward to next season.

The Americans: Missed the first half of the season as I was catching up. 80s set show about a couple posing as the all American family who are really deep cover Soviet spies. Period costumes & cars abound. They seem to do far more than I'm sure a real spy duo would have time to do and maintain cover. All kinds of 80s Cold War topical stuff. This year didn't end on a bang like the previous ones, they told their eldest daughter who they are as she has been suspicious. Their bosses think the daughter should become a spy herself as a US born citizen, she would stand up to even CIA back ground screenings. The parents aren't so sure and she isn't happy with them. She has become religious & at the end of the finale seems to tell someone else the truth. Well made drama that has several years before the Soviet Union tumbles.

Orphan Black: This is still running as it starts late in the year. Love this show and the lead but feel it's becoming an endless run around. Each new revelation leads to more mysteries to solve. Allison's story this year is the comic relief, so far away from the main arc. No new clones of Sarah this year but a whole batch of nasty boy clones.

Late Show with David Letterman: Loved Dave's show back in the 80s & 90s but haven't watched in a long time. Started to these last 2 weeks he was on as everyone was saying goodbye. The nostalgia was great, I think Dave was past his prime but got a great send off. Late night shows are so different now. Interview wise, Dave was better because he wasn't so scripted and would let a conversation go off on tangents. The monologues and Top Ten lists weren't as good as the old days. Best wishes and can't wait to see how Stephen Colbert does.

Doctor Who: this was last year but I'll just say the new Doctor played by Peter Capaldi attempted to be unlikable in the role for most of the slightly shortened season. Nice to see an older guy there after so many young ones in recent years. Finally no Doctor-companion romantic tension. The leads were fine, the stories just didn't move me. Except for the 2 part finale, pretty routine stuff. This was my favorite show and I'm starting to tire of it. Maybe next year will improve.
