Subject: The first new episode (some spoilers)

So. . .what did everybody think??

I thought it was pretty good. They did have to spend a fair amount of time educating the new and/or casual viewers about the backstory (which we true X-Philes already know by heart), but overall I enjoyed it. I thought it was much better than the second movie!

A couple of questions and/or comments: What episode was Svetlana originally in? I don't really remember her, but they did interview a lot of alien-abuductees over the years!

I'm confused as to why it's supposed to be "shocking" that maybe it's not really aliens, but a shadowy government (or non-government) cabal of greedy humans who are behind the abductions. It seems like that was advanced as a possible theory several times during the course of the original show.

Also, some of these people (not Mulder and Scully) seem awfully old to still be doing what they do. Skinner was apparently in his mid-40s when the show debuted in 1993, which would -- I'd think -- put him very near (if not past) retirement age by 2016; but he seems to still be an active employee of the FBI (although he's also apparently still an assistant director; which is not a lot of career advancement in a 23-year-time period). And the guy that Mulder met (the one with the beard and hat) at night; is he supposed to be the same guy who was a medical doctor/Army officer in Roswell in 1947? If so, he'd have to be at least 90 years old by now! And he looked awfully spry for nonagerian; more like about 70 or so. And I'm not even going to get into how CSM survived when we saw him "die", as death is rarely fatal in the realm of the X-Files, but I'd think he'd have died of *natural* causes by now; he was apparently in his late 50s when the show debuted, which would make him at least 80 by now!
