Colonel Fitz was a closet homosexual, and he covered up his shame over his homesexuality by overcompensating with extremes of hatred and anger expressed towards gay men and the homosexual community. It wasn't until he thought he had discovered that his son was also a homosexual that he finally had the courage to act on his impulses. He had become attracted to his neighbor, Lester [Kevin Spacey], but would not have been able to show that love until this incident with his son seemed to free him.

When Lester rebuffed his advances, he had to kill Lester to cover up his shame again.

The Colonel also overcompensated for his shame by making the armed forces a career. The army would provide him with a structure and discipline that he felt he needed to keep him from acting on his homosexual impulses.

You can see, by looking at his wife's face, how dry, sterile and lifeless his marriage had become. His wife is totally alone and confused and in such pain that she has become paralyzed in this relationship. She doesn't know what has become of her marriage or her life. He probably has not made love to her in years, and they have no real closeness or relationship.
