Inside the Church (Mitlan & Nickoli)

I had never been inside a church before. The richness of the place astounded me and I stared at the mosaic of colored glass and immense and intricate woodwork. Nickoli leads me to the doorway beside the alter. Then down a narrow hallway to the left. He stops and opens the door onto a small room. I step inside and my eyes are immediately drawn to the blue glow. I stepped toward the blue mist and peered into it. The child was inside, seemingly asleep.

I look up at Nickoli, who is watching me intently. I quickly look away back to the mist. It is a spell of sorts, but a protective one. Someone is trying to protect this child apparently from some great evil. They encased him and brought him to their most sacred place.

About that time I felt push from behind. Caught off balance, I fell forward into the mist. My left hand landed squarely upon the lad�s chest. I pulled it out quickly and examined my hand�nothing.

It happened so fast that the meaning of it had not yet registered in my mind but I sensed danger. I stepped quickly away form the boy and prayed that the spell be unbroken. It seemed to be unchanged�.swirling blue as before.

No, the danger was from somewhere�I heard a rush behind me and turned just in time to avoid Nickoli�s dagger in my back. I drew my sword and stood facing him. His eyes were filled with rage.
�YOU are the father?!!�
�I�I don�t�if this story of yours is true�aye�
Nickoli tossed the dagger onto the stone floor and drew his own sword.
�You cannot! I will not let you be� �he said circling me and purposefully blocking the door.
I am still trying to understand fully what just occurred.
Nickoli continues��Lift Shane from the mist�give him to me, and I will let you walk away. You will forget this has happened�
�No� �..I doubted his sincerity as well as Shane�s safety.
�Where is Ezella? She is King Belamore�s daughter. What have you done with her?�
�I don�t know?�
�You lie!�
�Even if I knew, I wouldn�t tell you�
Angrily he spats�..�Then you will DIE!�
After the first few thrusts and clashes of our swords, I knew that he was outmatched�especially with the dead arm. He knew it too; I could read it in his eyes.
Nickoli lost balance and fell to his knees. I pinned him there as I reached to the floor and picked up the dagger. Reading the intent in my eyes, he pleaded.
�You would kill me in the holy church?�
�Aye, would ye not have done the same to me? I don�t worship your god rember, that is why you call us barbarians�
I savored the look of terror in his eyes as he realized who I was not and his own death. Making short work of it, I cut his life vein. Then walked out of the church as he lay there with his life spilling as a dark red puddle onto the stone floor beneath him.
