The lead brood shifts, uneasy. She dislikes the way their stallion keeps vanishing; it is his job to protect them, and how can he do that if he is never here? She paws restlessly at the cold-packed earth, concious of her new role as the decision-maker of the herd. A lot rests on her choices.

He nuzzel rage in comfrt and then to his other mares he whickers. He takes a step by Pepsi and nudges her playfully. He stands, watching the herd.
