Subject: CHICOMS IN VIETNAM

I JUST POSTED THIS TO A 101st GROUP, IN RELATION TO A NEWS ARTICLE THAT CHINA ADMITTED TO HAVING BOOTS ON THE GROUND DURING THE VIETNAM WAR. I HAVE TALKED ABOUT THIS TIME BUT NEVER WROTE IT DOWN.

George Edward Brown Shortly after joining A trp, 2/17 Cav, !st bde at Kontum 6/66 we went on my cherry mission somewhere near the Laos border and the Ho Chi Ming trail. As the new guy in the 2nd platoon I rated the PRC25. This was also my first Huey ride and insertion, we reached our DZ and were told to exit the huey at what looked like 6' above the grass, except the grass was 6-7' high, ouch. We formed up and headed where we thought we were to go based on where we thought we were dropped off, except the pilot missed the DZ we were supposed to be at. Anyway not yet knowing all that we took off on our merry way and came across a broad trail under the jungle cover and started to follow it, past many unoccupied camp sites hidden just off the trail, soon realizing we were not where we were supposed to be ??? As we followed the HCM trail our lead squad ran smack into a couple of VC and a Chicom SF equivilent , the resulting firefight was short and violent, our Pointman Sgt. Ransdale was killed as were the 2 VC. The Chicom SF guy was wounded in both legs but managed to find a foxhole along the trail where he pinned us down from. A Mike Force unit was in the area and came up behind the Chinese soldier and killed him, then made contact with us and gave us an idea where we were and who we were fighting and that we better didi back to VN. We stayed long enough to clear a small LZ to have Sgt. Ransdale's body airlifted out. Then we back the way we came, at a very quick pace. The American leader of the MF, had filled us in on who we were fighting and where we were. We got back across the border and found a LZ to be extracted from. We also found out that the Huey pilot dropped us off in the wrong place. This was my only time tangling with a Chicom soldier . I liked the ride, didn't like the exit. There are a lot of details I've missed I'm sure, or buried in my head. But I survived to fight another day
