Well, the REALLY clever way to do it would be to build a 3D model of the whole room, simulate the sabers in there and then composite the lighting from that onto the live action room. To be honest though, that would be awfully complicated and probably require some pretty high end stuff to do properly, so I'd probably blag it and use a similar technique as you did with the sabers - mask and heavily feather the areas you think should be lit, and keyframe them to match the saber movement. You'll probably have to have a few masks to compensate for objects in the background and stuff. You could also use a similar technique to darken areas if you want to add shadows.
