Will I??? -- Grace, 20:58:48 10/06/02 Sun
Age:15
Gender:Female
As I walk onto the scorching sands of the Hatching Grounds, I see 13 other girls who are probably wondering the same thing I am: "Will I Impress?" I had no idea I would have others to worry about... I'm soo scared....I just want to have a friend to be with all the time....please, keep my story going while it's still starting......I just want a friend.

First Impression -- Michelle, 15:42:52 09/10/02 Tue
"Hurry up!" the headwoman exclaimed as she grabbed me out of bed. "The dragons are humming!"she told me exitedly. She threw my white Impression robe over my head as I reolised that now was the time I might impress a dragon. "Oh my gosh" I said as a flew out the door and ran as fast as I could down to the Hating Ground. When I got there the eggs were already rocking violently. I danced in place because the hot sand burnt my feet. The first egg cracked. A Bronze! A sign of a good clutch. The little Bronze was quickly impressed as so many other eggs began to hatch. A variety of Greens, Bronzes,Browns, and Blues. Then the Queen egg hatched! I slowly aprotched the egg but another girl was faster. Should have been faster, I yelled at myself mentally. Five minutes past and only one egg was left! Most of the other candadates left knowing that chanses were slim that it would contain thier parter. No way! Not me! I wasnt leving! I marched up to the egg, the only person on the hatching sands and watched it untill it hatched. A Green! The dragonette stumbled out of its egg and landed face first in the sand. I helped it up and unfoled the still damp wings of the little green. She nuzzled me and I wrapped my arms around her neck. The green then said *My name is Harrth*

{New thread, my same post- dunno 'bout you guys, but it was getting too far over on my screen} -- Arienne -Llwyd-, 23:43:58 06/24/02 Mon
Arienne looked over at the parts of the sands that were covered in blood. It is just blood, she reminded herself. To prove it, she scratched at a healing cut on her knuckle, which re-opened. The red liquid blossomed, but before it could drip, Arienne rubbed the blood away. Others people blood is different, isn't it, Lu? she asked the blue 'lizard with a sad sigh. Llwyd returned the question with the dragonet equivalent of 'Uh, sure...' Another rhetorical question, the human muttered. You have a problem with answering those. Another 'Uh, sure,' came from the 'lizard. A light smile appeared briefly on her features, which Arienne felt was a welcome change to the saddened look she had been wearing ever since entering the Hatching Cavern.
Realizing that she was still staring in the direction of the blood, as if in a trance, Arienne turned back towards K'ndelek. "Where..." she began. No good would come over her being faint at the sight of blood. In fact, bad might even come of it. She took a breath, closing her eyes breifly, and steadied herself. She forcefully pushed her fear aside. For the time being. "Where do we put the sand that's bloody?"

~enter~ -- Arienne -Llwyd-, 21:41:35 06/16/02 Sun
Arienne rubbed the worn stone on her ring, which was the same turquoise as her eyes. Was there a Hatching here? No, there wasnt, she decided. But this was the next Weyr that would have one. Ritaki and gold Alieth Her hearing told her that there were already people there. And Alieth hadnt even risen yet! Didnt really matter, of course. Excitement, apprehension, and hope would all be drifting about in the air. Shed get a few pre-clutch sketches. Hugging her satchel closer, the golden-haired girl walked through the tunnel that led to the High Reaches Sands. When she was half-way to the Hatching Cavern, twothree?screams pierced the air.
She broke into a run. What happened? The blue-grey lizard, Llwyd, launched himself from Ariennes shoulder and momentarily upset the girls balance. She quickly regained it, but slowed to a walk as she reached the edge of the Sands. The scene that lay before her It needed to be drawn. Not because of its beauty or the joy Arienne seated herself on the Sands, which were warm, but certaintly not the temperature that they would be. Llwyd perched on her shoulder as she chronicled the pain and death of the High Reaches Hatching Cavern. There were two dead bodies. And both, she could tell, were dead. One had hit his head. The other the wound look like the dagger wounds she had seen at her brief stay at the Healer Hall. There was a dagger in front of her; she picked it up. There were no drops of blood on it.
Probably a good idea not to interrupt Arienne murmed. Llwyd agreed by sending feelings of assent tinged by sadness. People werent supposed to die at the Hatching Sands.

She walked into the Sands, eyes bright and step light. She was obviously tanned from being outside often in the last week, and her hair showed signs of bleaching. She vlutched her bag to her chest and stepped in, dark blue orbs straying to find Asyl.
What she saw wasn't what she was expecting.
"SY!"
The call ripped from her throat faster than the bag was forgotten in the sand.
"SY! Oh SY!"
She skidded to a stop at his lifeless body, dropping to her knees and rocking his head in her arms despite the blood dripping onto her white robe.
"Sy...oh, Asyl...why...why now...why you?"
She ran a finger down his jawline, tears welling up in her eyes. After only short moments, they broke and washed over her face. She shook him slightly, eyes beginning to dilate.
"Wake up, Sy...why're you sleeping..."
Her head hung, chin touching breastbone. Her body shook with sobs as she clung to Asyl's body. Karsky's voice died into a whisper.
"Sy...!"
She curled up beside him, wiping the blood away from his face. After cleaning his face, she pushed his hair aside and kissed him lightly, breaking off into sobs as she did so. Her voice returned long enough for one final yell of agony.
"SY!"

Thorn fell to the sand beside Aly's form, choked sobs making his body convulse. His eyes went to the dagger that lay imbeded in her chest, and laid his head on her stomach, "Oh, by the shell of Faranth, Aly, my Aly, wake up...please..."
He could speak no more, he just sobbed and sobbed, holding her tightly, caressing her hair.

::Slipping in Quietly:: -- Arylanth, 20:55:05 06/11/02 Tue
The young girl slipped into the hatching grounds quietly, knowing full well that there were no eggs yet, but still wanting to visit the place. She glanced around uncertainly with silvery-blue eyes before she masked it, and stood quietly off to the side, watching the other people mill around and talk. Silver hair was for once unbound, and it gently whisped around her face, her eyes taking in all of the sites. The sand felt hot and uncomfortable under her feet, yet she ignored the discomfort, squinting slightly as the sun glinted off brightly from the sand.

A young woman walks in... -- Alexis Ja'Orson, 22:38:48 06/06/02 Thu
A girl of about 24 walks in from the kitchen, bored and curious at the same time, an odd mixture. She walks around, scuffing her feet in the soft sand, glancing around at the people who could be potential friends, but too afraid to say hi to them.

She walks in, dark blue eyes low and fixed on the sand beneath her feet. How could she face Sy now? After what she'd done to him...his look of pain. It all hurt. She sighs and looks up, spotting K'ndelek's head above the rest, and then Sy's close by. She continues walking until she reaches Sy. K'ndelek had retreated from the area by then, taking the hint when Karsky paused just in front of the man working furiously on his 'project.'
"Um...Asyl...? You said it'd be done...?"
She piques up after a few moments, keeping herself from wincing at the sound of her own voice. She waits for him to look up so she can catch his eye, although she fears what she might see there.

Thorn stood in the shadows, watching. He had been with Aly while she dyed the clothes, or rather Nymph had been for Thorn was too afraid of being caught to follow.
Fear was strong in Thorn's mind always, yet he knew on a Dragon's back he would be full of courage, for that was his place, as he had been told time and time again.
Nymph nipped his ear playfully, and Thorn scratched his eye ridges.
Soon Thorn mused Soon, I may show everyone I'm not what I seem...I'll show them I can be a Dragonrider

"Listen, you two,"
He snaps, yet it's a calm snap. If that's humanly possible.
"You can stop where you are. The Hatching Sands is no place to fight over anything, much less a male. If anything, it should be the other way around."
He watches them, and although his mind fumed with several dozen things to say, he chose the most irrelevent to see how they would react.

I don't have time on my side. ~.^) Although her eyes were on Thorn and her voice talking to him, her mind was off and about. When Sy had come closer, what had he ment by that phrase before "Sure, I'll go get him." Surely he hadn't ment... At the thought of it, she blushed, cheeks turning bright red. She gasps and turns away from Thorn, having just finished.
"So, why don't you follow Aly or something? If you're just standing here when K'ndelek walks in, he'll ask you why you didn't do anything to stop the fight."
She bites her lower lip and waits for Satrika to throw the first punch, mind too busy running off to do litte more than counter attacks for now.
Oh, what had he ment by that?

Enters... -- Satrika and Aiko, 20:37:20 05/13/02 Mon
The elder girl entered first, the littler, shyer child following her, clasping her sister's hand tightly.
Both looked around in wonder, and it seemed, that no matter the age of the girls, it seemed both were equaly dazzled, and looked as if never on Pern had they seen such a sight.
Although both knew that there were not yet eggs on the Sands, even if there had been, it wouldn't have made a difference in how enchanted the two looked.
Aiko, the younger one with the fire-orange hair, let go of her sister's had and began to suck ehr thumb. "Big isn't it, Satwika?"
Satrika nodded, smiling. "Isn't it?"
She dismissed her sister's lisp; as the five year old had never been able to pronounce her 'r's and 'l's right- or at least, not yet. But such things never mattered. Satrika knew that Aiko would learn in time; soon enough.
Aiko smiled sweetly, tugging at her sister's white robe excitedly. "Wook!! Thewe's awweady peopwe hewe!" she cried. "Maybe, thewe's othew wittwe kids fow me to pway with. Wouldn't that be wondewfuww?"
Satrika nodded, smiling down at the anxious little girl. "Maybe there'll be even a cute little boy for you to like," she teased, knowing very well what the girl's reaction would be.
"EEEEWWW! BOYS AWE YUUUUUUUCKY!" Aiko yelled, enthusiastically, and Satrika was sure that she had screamed loud enough for the whole Weyr to hear.
Satrika chided the girl genty for being so loud. "Sshhhh....any louder and the whole place will fall down!"
Aiko's green eyes widened. "REAWWY?!" she cried in alarm, looking up at the roof in remorse.
Satrika grinned, nodding. "REALLY."

*funfunfun!* -- Asyl and Alysia, 19:27:36 05/11/02 Sat
Smiling Asyl reached for the buried blade.... drawing it from the sand, Sy flipped it up behind his back and balanced the shaft in his palm...
"Interesting blade"
The young man noted the letters...
"Thanks Karsky... mine was stolen by that 'Greythorn' on our way here"
Alysia rolled her eyes at her twins showoff antics...
"Shouldn't have done that..."
"Aww... Aly I haven't done one since we got raided"
Asyl rolled his eyes back at Alysia... blonde curls bounced as Aly groaned... turning her back on Sy, Aly continued to explain to Karsky...
"See now he's going to sit down... pull out a block of wood or something and begin to carve it... he wont move until he finishes it... even if it takes hours"
Asyl put down the knife as Aly predicted what he was about to do...
"Well do you have anything better to do?"
Immediatly Asyl regretted saying that and moaned...
"Aallllyyy...you've got that look again"
The girl smiled brushing a stray lock of bronze from her no longer angellic blue eyes...
"Ohh Sy, this weyr needs to experiance some fun"
Sighing Asyl nodded...
"I'm in"
Rising he tossed the knife back to Karsky...
"What's the plan?"
"Gather round if you want to join in... I've got an idea"

*two sided memories* -- Alysia and Asyl, 23:03:14 05/08/02 Wed
Deep blue orbs stared unfocused... a gust of wind teased Alysia's cheek like the breath of a dragon. Her mind and body were dettached from their surroundings as Asyl kept up a friendly conversation with the other Canidates...
Aly's mind was tumbling, lost amid her soul in the bottomless cavern of her memories.
As Asyl brought up their parents, a shudder coarsed through Alysia's back. Against her will, a memory burned into her mind, imprinting its self deeper, letting a searing pain of anguish and sorrow pound through her veins. Squeezing the blue orbs shut Alysia tried her hardest to push it away but the images of her past burned her eyes...
A musty odor wafted through the warmth... Aly snuggled deeper into the false security of the hides... barely awake but still clinging onto the past night's dreams.
Slowly letting her eyes open to the caress of sunlight a smile brushed Alysia's lips... the sleepy wonderment of life it's self was still apon her.
Then a pounding of feet pentrated the calm. Instantly the five year old was awake... looking with frightened eyes across the tiny chamber Aly saw the comforting sight of a bronze haired little boy... her twin. Though Asyl was also awake and worried the girl felt reassured by the sight of her brother.
Aly's calm reassurance was replaced by a slow frantic feeling of fear as she snuck from the warmth and security of her bed. Slight feet pattered across the stone and Aly stuck her head out the window... her five year old form barely could see over the ledge but, the young one still had enough of a veiw to have the horrrible image be burned into her mind for all times...
Alysia's eyes hardened and stood tall, her chin up... she would not let the past ruin her future... tossing blonde curls into the air, Aly's eyes danced across the hollowed sands where the past and present combined in an endless world where humans are combined with dragons... and in that instance her hope and courage surged back into her body, coarsing through her veins...
Asyl felt in the back of his mind a fear and immediatly turned his bronze flecked eyes the Alysia... Seeing her stance and far off eyes the memory washed over him also...
The little boy sat up in bed... golden eyes, flecked with bronze wide with uncertainty. There was too much noise for the hour of dawn. Looking over to his sister's bed, there was only a reasess where her body once lay... the five year old boy lept from bed... even at his young age Asyl had been protective of his sister... no matter how much she wanted to take over and lead through the trail that life and fate had twisted.
Seeing the young, niave eyes stare, with mouth open and full lips parted in a silent scream. Asyl raced up to her and pushed himself up to look out the window... there... Asyl could not believe his eyes.
Sylinath circled another bronze. K'noss' Likarth Asyl noted. K'thos had been drunk the night before Sy realized franticlly looking for the rider... but the bronze rider was no where to be seen. Sylinath hissed at Likarth and reared, expanding his translucent wings to their full extent so the membrane was stretched... Likarth lunged jaws open revealing jagged mountains of white daggers.
Asyl watched in horror as R'myr, rider of Sylanth ran with determination and lept into the middle of the turmoil... Confident that sensibilty and Sylanth's love for him would over come anger...
Asyl screamed as R'myr took the thrash of Sylanth's claws and the crush of Likarth's jaws on his chest...
Immediatly Sylanth stopped the red of anger and his blood thirsty lust gone as the pain that his slowly dying bronze rider was induring... Bugling Sylanth disappearedbetween forever...
Myley screamed running down from the wall that surrounded the weyr... screaming at her own green Mysith as she tried to hold onto the dragon from leaping between to join her weyr mate... reaching R'myr's bloody, battered body Myley wept, yelling curses to K'noss and Likarth... cradling R'myr's head in her lap, Myley drew her dagger and plunged the glinting tip into the depths of her heart...
Asyl in a daze, his mind not functioning properly for nothing of the sort could ever happen to him, heard Alysia scream to Myley as the woman fell backwards blood flowing from her chest...
"MOMMY!"
Asyl jerked from the horrible memory... glancing over to Alysia he knew that she had also just seen death of the only people in the world who had ever touched the twins...

Stumbles in... -- Alysia, 17:41:41 05/05/02 Sun
The poor girl ran blindly through the halls her feet carrying her sightless body around the twisted weyr...
Running for once instead of dancing her dress caught her legs and in moments the girl was laying sprawled in sand...
Two slim hands closed over the grains, as she pushed herself up... golden curls created a curtain across her milk white face, hiding her tears...
Smoothing the once clean dress and composing herself, Alysia walked onto the sands...
Her clear blue eyes looked in amazement at the amount of people that had arrived since she had been here first... only a week or two before...
The memory brought laughter to her lips... the blessing she had made, her singing, her dance... Smiling her eccentric attitude changed once more...
Picking a tune she began to sing and danced onto the sands to greet the others...

*Enters again, as light melted below the horizon* -- Thorn, 16:43:54 04/23/02 Tue
Thorn entered on silent feet, his blue Firelizard Nymph on his shoulder, talons piercing Thorn's skin. Thorn didn't mind, pain was irrelevant. He sat in the warm sand, aware that a clutch did not rest nearby, and he thought, Nymph cuddling up, his tail around Thorn's neck.
Thorn watched through tear soaked optics as his mother's green Tokith disapeared Between Rarina, his mother not aboard. His eyes went to his mother, whom lay almost dumbly, her eyes squeezed shut, her breath harsh.
His father, K'ol, stood in front of Thorn almost completely blocking his view. Rarina seemed to be fumbling with one hand at her belt, and what she withdrew would break Thorn's, K'ol's, and the whole Weyr's hearts.
Her belt dagger glistened, and she screamed out one name, "TOKITH!" before jabbing the thing into her abdomen. K'ol was shaking horrbly, unable to move, the shock to much to bear. Healers ran up, and Thorn lept toward his mother sobbing.
Pain.
Thorn was backhanded, and as he turned an almost complete somersault in the air, the four turns old child saw the hand that hit him, and realized this hand belonged to the person he least expected.
K'ol.
Thorn lay in the grass, a cut cross his forehead bleeding, blood dripping into his eyes..
He could faintly see K'ol kneeling before Rarena, his hands holding hers, sobbing.
Thorn didn't move, just laid there, sobbing, feeling his whole world shattering apart, feeling as if massive Dragons gripped him and pulled him to shreds.
He couldn't go on...the thoughts were hard, the thoughts scared him.

.::.Walks in, bright eyes peering around.::. -- Karsky, 21:28:47 04/21/02 Sun
*Karsky padded down High Reachess hallways, booted feet muffling the clip of her stride. Her deep, blue
eyes sparkled like two stars placed in the night of the heavens. She smiled, even teeth
comlpimenting her eyes. The tall girl of 16-turns hummed a jaunty tune, her feet padding to the
tune. Soon, the tune picked up pace, leaving her no choice but to dance her way into the Sands. It
certainly wasnt traditional Harper music, but it was from a Harper. Her brother had composed
the song for her while she had been training a delinquent child. But that was a story for another
time. As she waltzed down the halls, her hair fell out of its loose band, falling into her face in neat
layers. The strawberry-blonde color was enhanced by the heat coming from the near-by Sands,
causing it to glow warmly as it had done so many time before when she sat in front of a camp-fire.
She smiled fondly at the memory of camping and the person it brought to mind. Aukin, the
wonderous son of the Holder. He was the one who had taught her everything she knew. From
traditional dance to traders dance, and from camping to acting like royalty, hed taught her
everything. Hed even told her stories about all the Weyrs and their histories. Hed taught her to
read so he wouldnt have to tell her everything. Karsky had always been fascinated by reading and
nothing had stopped her from doing it. One night...*
* * F L A S H B A C K * *
**Karsky sat on the battlements closest to the palace door, watching the gaurds intently. She had
been moniterrng them for two weeks now, watching to see when each shift passed. Her first
intention had been to only learn the shifts, but she had managed to learn the gaurds personalities
as well. Like the two guarding the door now, they wernt as tough as the ones on duty before
them. They were somewhat calmer and acted like they knew what they were doing when in
reality, they didnt. Those two would be the easiest to slip by. Karsky moved further down the
stair, avoiding showing her shadow and giving a heads-up to the guards. They may be dumb, but
they had brute strength to make up for it.**
**The girl squatted and waited for the next guard-round. Just as the two senetried turned and the
guards left, sh sprang forward and padded the ground quietly, slipping in through the doors and
closing them gently. She slipped into the shadows, breathing shallowly. After making sure the
guards had not heard, she glided through the shadows, taking the second right turn and then
slipping across the hall to the left. She came out of the shadows, brushing off any dust that had
gathered on her dress and tilted her chin up. Using the walk Aukin had taught her, she moved into
the library, nodding to a visiting official and making her way towards a shelf. She picked a scroll
and sat down, rolling it open. Remembering to keep her posture, she studied it happily, soaking
up the information.**
**The time trickled by at a fast pace until she finally rolled up the scroll and replaced it. She
almost smiled, but kept it back, about to slip into the shadows again. A hand touched her
shoulder, turning her around to face the owner. Small black eyes stared down into hers, sizing her
up. Remembering she was supposed to be royalty, she narrowed her eyes slightly and brushed his
hand off her shoulder, looking up at him calmly with a fake smile.**
And who do I have the pleasure of addressing, sir?
**She recited cooly, voice pitched to match those of the Ladies. The man lifted his eyebrowns
and placed his hands at his side, obviously pleased with her answer to his silent question. He
bowed and she curtsied, placing her right foot behind her left and dipping. The man spoke.**
I am surprised you do not reconize me, my Lady.
**He said with a knowing smile, black eyes glittering in humor. Karsky felt herself frown against
her will at his statement, racking her brains for an answer. As she looked at him, a name popped
into her mind. Oh great, she moaned mentally, Only he would know who I am. But
she quickly recovered from the initial shock.**
I do reconize you, mLord, I was merely testing you. Ive heard you have a great fondness for
practical jokes, sir.
**The Holder quirked an eyebrow, looking around to make sure no one was left in the library.
Seeing that his assumption was correct, he gripped her arm and pulled her into a corner, dropping
the Holder attitude.**
Youre as good as Aukin told me. You really should come to one of my parties.
**Karsky felt her mouth round into an o of surprise at his comment. The Lord Holder merely
smiled and removed his hands to fold them across his chest.**
Yes, I know who you are, Karsky. I managed to pry the information from Aukin before he went
off to look for you.
**In a last, desperate attempt to hide her nature, Karsky tried a move she had thought up.**
Why, mLord Holder, I dont believe Ive ever heard the name Karsky before. What in the
shar- er, heavens are you talking about?
**She nearly winced at her slip-up, knowing most officials didnt use shards around him. The
Lord Holder only smiled and nodded knowingly, leaving her time to recover and confess.**
Alright, sir. Youve blown my cover. I admit it.
**The Holder nodded again, eyes twinkling merrily.**
I knew youd confess sooner or later, so I didnt say anything.
So whatre ya gonna do with me?
Well, first, were going to change your accent so you dont have a chance of slipping-up again.
**The Holder started listing off ways to improve her tecnique, leaving Karsky speechless. This
man, she thought, This man must be insane. Or maybe he really does want me to pull a
prank on a certain visitor... As soon as she thought that, a face flashed into her mind: that of a
long and narrow face with high cheekbones and a crooked nose. A pair of crude specticles hung
over his nose and did nothing to hide his beady grey eyes. Karsky smiled sweetly and said his
name.**
Bithil.
**The Lord Holder seemed surprised and nodded dumbly. Basking in her glory, the girl dived
farther, pushing the limits like she always did. Only this time, she would not get away with it.**
I knew it had to be Bithil because he seems the type to pull one of those practical jokes you are
so fond of. Am I correct?
**The Lord Holder frowned and adjusted his jacket, staring down at Karsky.**
I had rather hoped you would know how to keep your mouth shut. I had been planning to pull a
prank on Bithil for some time now, and you would have been included. If you knew how to be
quiet. You see, my plan involves you being VERY quiet, and since you cant do that, I cant offer
you the position.
**Karsky felt her heart drop from her ribcage to her feet as she stared back at him, mouth dry.
She stuttered out an answer in vain.**
But, sir! I can be quiet. Please give me another chance!
Ill think about it, but for now, you better run off before the guards get to you.
**As he said that, he rang a bell to signal the guards. Karsky glanced at him in resentment and
slunked into the shadows, speeding off towards the exit. As she passed through the doors, she
heared the holder call out.**
And until further notice, you are hearby banished from my Hold. And I never want to see you
around Aukin again!
**Karsky stumbled past the guards in blind shock, closing the main door behind her. She leaned
against it, tears streaming where they had never been before. The irl buried her face in her hands,
sobbing painfully past the cramp in her side. She felt a hand on her shoulder, this time a familiar
one. She looked up through her tears into her loves face, moving into his arms to cry against him.
Aukin smiled sadly and led her away from the palace, still cradling her to him. Soon, they slipped
into an unnoticed place, Aukin waiting until Karsky could regain her control.**
I overheard your conversation with my father, Karsky...
**He started. She looked up and nodded.**
Yes, it didnt go too well, did it?
No, it didnt. But when my father learned of us, he was angry and I heard him say hed do
anything to get us apart.
It seems like hes doing a fine job of it, too.
**Karsky mumbled the last comment, not expecting to be pulled into another embrace, this time
feeling Aukins tears on her head. She looked up, eyes startled. She reached up and brushed away
a tear, comforting him like he had her.**
Please, Aukin, dont cry. Itll only make this harder.
I know...but Ill miss you so.
And Ill miss you.
**They whispered their farewells and parted, Autin going back to the palace and Karsky to her
home. She told her care-taker, who knew it would happen someday and packed her things. As she
was folding the dress she had worn, a plan came to her mind. She grabbed a weyrhide and pen,
scratching a message onto it. Eagerly she slipped into dark clothes and grabbed her bag, sliding
out the window and dropping to the ground. She hid her bag in the bushes, grinning happily. If
she was going to leave, shed do it with style...**

*Karsky snapped back to reality as a wave of heat hit her from the Sands, causing her strawberry
blonde hair to glow in the heat. She smiled and stepped onto the sand, knowing her feet wouldnt
slip. It would be fun to live here, having a new slate to create a life on. She could choose any
personality she wanted and live in it. She could be the dark and mysterious type, always causing
trouble, or the preppy type who talked to everyone and made friends with every rider in the Weyr.
Or she could be herself. A broken, worn-out child who desperatly needed love. But, no. She
wouldnt be herself completely. At least not yet. That thought brought up why she was here,
causing her to grimice as she remembered what happened after she was ordered to leave her
Hold.*

**Karsky curled her hands over the stone masonry of the palace and hefted herself up. She felt
her feet leave the ground and seek hold in the blocks of the wall. She intook her breath sharply as
her left foot caught on a lose stone, causing her to stumble. She managed to haul herself over the
wall and tumble into the grass, holding her ankle painfully. After what seemed like hours of
nursing herself out of a pity-party, she stood and hobled off. She would need some sort of
transportation, she would have no chance of making tracks quickly. Afterall, there had been a
small price issued on her head. Karsky knew the loot was merely for show, Aukin's father
wouldn't have the guts to kill her. At the memory of her one love, her heart constricted in visible
pain. A sob broke through her mouth as she continued to stumble her way to a small hamlet.**
**The girl woke to the sound of a mother tutting her children out the door. Karsky groaned and
sat up quickly, immediantly wishing she hadn't. Her hands flew to her head, holding it as she
doubled over in pain. The mother hurried over, worry evident in her eyes.
"You okay little one? You took quite a fall an' the village lead'r told me ta look after you."
**Karsky looked up at her, forcing a smile onto her face. She looked at her surroundings before
answering the lady.**
How did I get here, maam? I only remember walking along some battlements and then a quick
shove to my back. The rest is a mystery.
**She lied through clenched teeth, making her sapphire eyes as big as they could. The mtoher fell
for it and began to cluck around her again.**
Oh dearie me! What an awful thing to happen to a pretty thing as yourself. Why, who would
want to do such a thing! My, my, oh well, lets get you clean up, girl. You may call me Mrs.
Mary.
**The woman helped Karsky up and led her to th humble bathing room where she left her to her
own devices. The girl smiled, feeling her heart jump into her throat at the sight of bathing water.
With a contented sigh, she shed her clothes and slipped into the water. After bathing herself and
thoroughly scrubbing her hair, she sighed and let herself soak. Karsky stared at the odd pakage of
berries beside the sand. She picked them up and studied them, weighing them in her palm. They
would be good for dying, which is what she needed to do in case the Holder had sent out his
people to look for her. She carefully squished three berries in her hand and applied them liberally
to the top of her head and the hair around her ears, leaving the rest a coppery red. She washed her
hands and pulled out her pocket knife, sliding the blade through the end of the dyed hair. She
tossed it away and cleaned her knife and replaced it. She grabbed a brush and combed out her hair
until it was straight, which took some time. When she finally had her hair to her liking, she
stepped back and regarded herself in the mirror. She hardly reconized herself in the older-looking
girl. Her luxorious black hair fell aroud her shoulders in one continuous wave, accenting her blue
eyes like her strawberry blonde hair had never done. Karsky smiled at her reflection and absently
pulled on the clothes Mary had provided, which happened to be a sleeveless, plain dress made of
sackcloth. She looked exactly like a farmers daughter. The thought sent a thrill through her for
some reason. As she stepped out of the bathing room, she tucked away her knife and rummaged
around for farming history. She found Mary in the kitchen, baking bread for breakfast.**
Mary?
**She asked quietly, keeping her blu eyes wide. The plump housewife turned around with a
delightful smile, envealoping Karsky in a floury hug.**
My dear! You look beautiful! Oh, my boysll love you. Im surprised a pretty one like yourself
doesnt have a husband yet.
**Karsky gulped, a painful image of Aukin seared across her mind. She had to remember that
people like Mary married early. She swallowed past the lump in her throat, lying again.**
Aye, sadly enough, my father wouldn let me marry. Although Im interested in raising a family.
It doesnt feel right to have all your friends married and youre the only one whos not.
**She said, watching Marys face closely. Mary lit up like a fire.**
Really? Well maybe my boys can take care of that for you. Im sure youll like Kagem. Hes our
second born, but Jeran is already married.
**Karsky made herself smile and blush, looking out the window.**
You think so? Which one is he?
**Mary beamed at her reaction and pulled her away to the stove.**
Well have time to chat later, but lets get dinner ready.
** E N D F L A S H B A C K **
*Karsky shivered despite the blazing heat of the Sands. Those days had been torture. She had had
to play sweet and simple to Kagem and his family. She wiped away the cold sweat that had
formed on her brow, remembering well Kagems face. He wasnt ugly, he was what she would
call...handsome. His honest brown eyes always felt like they could see to your heart. And it had
made her charade all the harder. She still longed for Aukin, but Kagem made her legs feel like
jelly. So she had ran from the place and started a third life, searching to be closer to Aukin. She
ran back to the Hold and became a helper to a merchant. Karsky had learned the ways of being a
merchant quickly and managed to get acess to the Holders encampment after a Turn or two.
Unfortunatly, she heard that Aukin had been transferred to Tillek/ Hold and now this Hold had
one of the Holders children from Tillek/. She stayed as a merchant for a few more weeks, making
arangements and then setting off again. She had moved into Southern and her hair had become
bleached by the sun. And then Thread had struck the Southern continent.**
** F L A S H B A C K **
**16-Turn old Karsky grumbled as she hauled on the lead rope of a stubborn roan runner. She
sighed and sat down on a nearby rock, letting him graze contentedly. The only way to get a
stubborn runner was to let him eat himself into stupidity. She sighed and stretched out on the rock
after tying the rope to a tree. She must have dozed because she was woken by the frantic
squealing of the roan. Her clear blue eyes opened as a gasp caught in her throat. Thread! She
scrambled off the rock and untied the runner, hopping on his back and kicking him into action. He
immediantly ran off in a crazy direction. Karsky reigned him in and headed for an outcropping of
rocks. She forced the runner in under the rocks and followed, keeping an eye to the skies. What
she saw changed her life.**
**A brown dragon swooped out, catching her off-gaurd. But the bright flame that spurted from
his jaws sent her mind reeling. She tore her eyes from the dragon and crept back under the rocks,
waiting for the Thread to pass or be charred.**
**
**After what seemed like ages, the ble eyed girl crawled out, dragging the runner with her.
Shakily she checked the skies and after making sure there was no more Thread, she lead the
obediant roan back to her home. She asked around later about the giant lizard in the sky and
found the answers she wanted. She sold everything except a few changes of clothes and a few
other things and set off. Soon, by way of foot, she reached a Weyr. She didnt want to go to
Southern Weyr, she absolutely hated her hair being blonde. It didnt go well with her large, dark
blue eyes. Along the way to the Weyr where she would eventually ride a dragon, the coppery
color of her birth began to infiltrate the detestable blonde and the tanning of a year in Southern
began to wear off to a normal, healthy glow. The climates she traveled through had caused her
hair to become wavey and she had cut it to her shoulders. With a joy to override every other joy,
she had stepped into High Reaches.**

**Karsky began to smile, for a good reason. This is where she could truely
become herself. She wouldnt have to hide behind a noble mask, or a farmer mask, a herder mask
or even a merchants mask. No, she could be herself. The only problem was, she had been other
people for so long, she had forgotten who she really was. She bit her lower lip and pushed the
thought away, knowing she could find that out in time.**
**She shook her head stubbornly and grinned, eyes wandering over to the three other people in the Sands. When they fell on Alysia, she smiled a bit wider, glad to see at least one of them had grace. She shook her blonde curls and walked out, seeing that no one was here besides Thorn. Waving to him, she slipped out to find either the Weyrwoman or the one in charge.*
(Okay, okay. I was bored! Don't blame me for typing that much. Besides, I like this char! Put alotta effort inta this one. *for once*)

Already knowing that this sand held nothing, he entered. He found the weyr scarce, and was glad for some solitude, maybe he would Impress here when a clutch was laid?

Dances... -- Alysia, 00:34:14 03/30/02 Sat
"By the Golden Egg of Faranth
By the Weyrwoman, wise and true,
Breed a flight of bronze and brown wings,
Breed a flight of green and blue.
Breed riders, strong and daring,
Dragon-loving, born as hatched
Flight of hundreds soaring skyward,
Man and dragon fully matched."
A tall girl of sixteen turns danced across the empty sands, her clean, white dress teasing the sand as it swirled around her thin frame... the girl's voice was strong and clear, with a beautiful richness as she sang the songs of old...
Smiling, the girl tossed her head of bronze and amber curls, letting them tumble around her milk white face...
Stand up proudly in the middle of the hot sands, Alysia began to dance on pointed toes, her movements liqued and graceful... falling into a curtsy Alysia stood alone on the hot sands with only the memories of past births, impressions, and emotions...
"I hope your clutch to be blessed with the many a leaderly bronze, fiery-spirited green, level-headed brown, fun-loving blue, and wonderous gold... good luck to all... dragons and canidates."
Bowing her head Alysia began to sing once again, and with graceful dancing her feet practically flew over the sand, carrying her swiftly off the sands...
Maybe one day Alysia would be here on the sands again... as a canidate... but for now she would live as a untouchable dreamer, who wandered this Thread scored planet in search of the meaning of life... through the dance of her light feet and the beautiful song that slipped from her tongue.
(ooc: odd? yes!... but that is Alysia, fo she'll never fit in)
