Subject: Hikes at Rolling Ridge

Some of you may have visited Rolling Ridge in the past - the property is a 1400 acre nature preserve located near the end of Mission Road. This year, I'm on the property as resident naturalist and am leading several hikes and programs, all of which are free of charge and open to the public. I hope to see some of you at the next programs!

March Programs:
March 9 - Identifying Plants in Winter
How can you identify a tree without its leaves? Using buds and bark and tree shape, of course. Some buds are fuzzy, others hard, some red, some brown. Bark can be smooth or cut into deep grooves or can flake off in plates. Trees can be straight and tall or twisty, their branches reaching upward or spreading outward.

March 23 - Spring Ephemerals and Rocky Branch Tour
This is my favorite hike of the year. The first delicate, white spring flowers poking up through the leaf litter are called spring ephemberals and their display is at its best in the southern Appalachians. We'll be traveling along Rocky Branch, one of the most fascinating areas on the property, to search for spring ephemerals. For part of the time we'll be walking off the trail, probably climbing over rocks, so wear good hiking shoes.

All programs involve some amount of walking. Wear good walking shoes and comfortable clothes. Bring water and a bag lunch. Binoculars and field guides are always welcome but are not necessary. March programs begin at the Niles Cabin (see directions below) at 10:30 am. Please contact Sheila Bach or Anna Hess if you are interested in coming to to the programs. The contact information is:

To reach Rolling Ridge:
From Route 9, turn onto Mission Road and drive for about 6.5 miles. Turn left onto a dirt road - a sign says Rolling Ridge. Go 1 mile to an intersection. Turn right. Take next left, next right, and next right. The last two rights say Niles Cottage.

Stay tuned for more programs in the spring!
