Greg,

To see what sort of hotel accomodation is available in Sri Lanka try their web server, www.lanka.net, and either search through the 'TRAVEL GUIDE' section, or scroll down and select 'Hotels' on the top right hand side window that has 'select Category A' in it.

The site does not give any prices, but it does include addresses and phone numbers that might be helpful.

Also at the cheaper end of the price range are what the Sri Lankans call Guest or Rest Houses, which are simular to our B&Bs. The Rest Houses are goverment run, and the Guest Houses are private. Unfortunatly you don't know the availability, cost or what your getting until you get there.

As for areas to stay in, Colombo will be a bit more expensive, Negombo is about 1 hours drive north of Colombo, Mt Lavinia is about half hour south of Colombo, and the beach resorts at Hikkaduwa and Bentota are about 2-3 hours south of Colombo.

By the way, a decent bottle of the local liquor, arrack, costs about 3 quid, and like they say, "A bottle a day keeps the DTs at bay"

Best of luck...Paul
