Date Posted: 928983785PDT I posted this at Fish N Net. Thought I'd post it here as well...... Well one day I sat around all day watching TV and trying different knots with Spectra an Mono. The Knot I'm using is kind of my own invention but I'll try and tell you what I can. First create a double line in the spectra with a Bimini twist. you can use a few more twist than usual, do so. Now lay the double line and mono side by side, coming from opposite directions. Put your finger between the two. Take the mono tag end and wrap it around the double spec towards the Bimini. Wrap it six times then pass it between the two lines next to your finger. now take the twin spectra tag and wrap it around the main mono ten to twelve times. Take the end and slide it between the two lines where your finger is going the opposite direction of the mono tag. Now if you've done every thing right: you can slowly pull the knot up making sure that everything lies down smooth and tight. The mono is the end to watch: it will try and make the spectra wrap but it has to wrap around the spectra double line. The finished knot should look like a little cross, trim the tags and add some super glue to the knot and your done. Your probably really confused now sorry it's hard to describe. I'm going to set up a knot section on my page when I get the chance. Great knot though. A simpler approach is a double loop to loop connection. Tie Bimini's on both lines leaving a loop on each end about six inches long( or longer if your using a big bulk spool of line. Pass the loop end of the mono through the spectra loop then pass your line spool through the mono loop. Pull tight. This is almost fool-proof, at least if you know how to tie a bimini. A couple more things though the knots described are virtually 100% spectra has poor knot strength in general. For this reason I always use heavier spectra with lighter mono. I've got a rig with twenty spectra and fifteen mono. Another with 30 spectra 25 mono, and another with 50 spectra and forty mono. I'm sure you get the idea. Since the spectra is so thin it makes little difference. I only spool on a hundred feet or so of the mono, just enough for a good cast, and I change it often. The spectra virtually lasts for ever. My thirty outfit has had the same spectra on it for about five years. Every year I cut about five feet of it off when I re-do the splice but it shows no signs of wear. I used to respool all my reels every spring. Lots of $$$$ Now I just put a fresh hundred or more feet as the top shot and I'm in. So using the spectra is cheaper in the long run than just spooling mono Despite the high initual investment. I'm telling ya the day is coming when all my rigs will have spectra. One more thing look for small reels with good drags I use a lot of TLD's but I'm fishing Off-shore, not Off shore.Have you ever seen a TLD 5 its about the size of a small ABU but with a great drag. It holds about 500yds of 30 spectra with a 25 mono top. got to be my favorite rig right now. A good drag allows you to take advantage of all that good line. Hope this helps..
