Date Posted: 930285954PDT Posted By: John Newell First let me say hello to a bunch of friends i haven't seen in a while. Between Little league baseball, work and planning my vacation i just haven't had much time to be on the net. Now that said, Below is a fishing report I posted to the Amigos de Baja web site... With only one ommision that I can talk about on here...They wouldn't let me release the Swordfish! I tried, and must admit that I am lucky to have even catch one, but after we had killed it and the captain told me that he has been fishing baja for 4 -5 days a week for thirteen years and this was only his 3rd swordfish I felt sick for not standing my ground for releasing it. That said, I must say though that fresh Swordfish is the best damn fish I have ever eaten! Read and weep! My trip to Cabo! First we stayed at the Plaza Nautica… Unbelievable! Monday June 14th We had chartered the El Chilito with Reel Easy. A 28 ft californian. When me and my Father got to the boat at 6am we were told that the usual Captain Julio was sick. Alverto (also a captain) who usually mates was to be our Captain and "windy" who used to be a captain on this same boat would mate for us. The Boat was in top-notch shape, all the internationals were filled with new line, and the drags on the reels are stored backed all the way off. After getting some live bait we headed up the Sea of cortez coast while Windy retied new leaders for all the lures and the pitch rod. I was impressed. I could get real long winded here but let me just some it up for you. By the end of the day we had Two nice Dorado, released my Dad's first marlin, And I caught MY FIRST SWORDFISH! The dorado came on the lures, By the way these guys had an incredible collection of lures, and all the billfish came on live baits. Dads Marlin went about 150, and put on one heck of a show with the first 5 minutes of the 45 minute fight spent mostly in the air. We spotted the Swordfish tailing about 1:30pm, we pitched a live bait and the sword went down deep. Windy who was fun as heck to fish with had Alverto back the boat down on the bait, which caused the bait to swim down deep too. He put the rod in a holder and was hand lining the bait. He must have stripped about a 100 feet of line of the reel when when he turned to me with a BIG grin on his face! He pulled off about 15 more feet of line, handed me the rod and told me to reel down and set the hook, I did and the Fight was on. The Sword only jumped once but it was spectacular. This is by far the strongest fish I have ever fought. I fought him for 2 hrs 44mins on 40lb gear and I never used the chair. But after 45 minutes I decided the belt would be a good thing to have! Anyway we landed the beast, I was about to release it when I was told by the crew that this was really special and that it eats great, so the decision was made to keep this one. At this point I would like to say that we did release three marlin, and two Dorado on this trip. Anyway these guys were great to fish with and I promise you could do a lot worse. The sword measured 112 inches from tip of bill to tip of tail I guess about 170 lbs. By time we got back to dock the fish weigh station was closed. Tuesday June 15th Me and my wife went out on the Tracy Ann a 31 ft Bertram with the Pisces fleet. Once again a ship shape boat and able crew with great equipment. Benito agundez is the captain. My wife caught about a 35lb dorado and I caught my first Marlin. Wow two days and I have caught my first marlin and my first swordfish. I am in a dream I swear! Friday June 18th Me and my wife are back out on the El Chilito, Now with Captain Julio and Alverto as mate. This day we were fishing in about six foot seas all day, but my wife doesn't get the least bit sea sick. We were trying to get my wife on her first Marlin. We caught three Dorado, released two smaller ones around 20 lbs and kept the big one about 35lbs. Julio was even more fun than Windy, and to watch him and Alverto work together was like watching a well oiled machine. We spotted and pitched baits to a total of 13 marlin that day. They just weren't hungry. We hooked up another two marlin on the lures that came off five minutes into each fight. At 1:45 pm I offered Julio (who speaks good English) A water, knowing that we were supposed to be back at 2pm. Julio said "no, I don't want water I want a MARLIN!" I was thrilled by his attitude. At a 2:45pm we are still prowling the waters looking for Marlin, and I got the feeling that Julio wasn't going to come in till we got one. Alverto spotted one, but Julio couldn't see it to get the boat in position, so Julio handed over the controls to Alverto and he went down to cast the live bait. He cast the bait out and is keeping the rod as high as possible to keep as much as the line out of the water. My wife and I can both see the marlin, but he is staying about 15 feet right behind the bait. He just stays there, keeping pace with the bait for a minute, then suddenly a second marlin (bigger) that none of us had seen attacks the bait from below skyrocketing into the air! It was an unbelievable strike, Julio had planned on letting my wife set the hook, but just reacted and got the hook in this marlin and quickly got the rod in my wife's hands. After many jumps a couple tail walks, some expert boat handling, and right at 1 hour we had the estimated 180 lb marlin on the boat for a couple of quick pics and then back in the water to fight another day. We made dock again after 5pm with these guys, when we were supposed to return around 2 pm. I highly recommend these guys! Well that's about it, except I would like to tell any other fishermen heading down that way, you must snorkel Chilleno bay, do the Four Wheelers, Go to Lovers Beach… bring your mask and snorkel here to, ignore the time share people, drink a shot upside down at the gigglin marlin, have a waborita at Cabo Wabo, and drink some Pacifico clara, best Mexican beer I have ever had! Well, I got back and had a paycheck in the mail box, my wife said she was putting $200 back into the vacation fund so we can take the kids back next year! A special thanks to Mike Hebert and Bill Hilton! Stress your line, not your mind! John Newell [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
