Subject: not-so-novel an idea

well, after a 7-year hiatus from cable tv, i have recently subscribed to "just the basic" programming ... which includes two of my favorites - the history channel and the classic movie channel! :)

earlier, while watching a "classic" of W.C. Fields from the 1940's, i was reminded of just how much "life in the U.S." has changed during an "average life span" of 70 years or so ... *** side note: i was born a "few" decades later from the time this particular movie of "Mr. Fields'" made its original debut in the theaters! :) ... but, i'm still a "classic movie" fan just the same! :) anyways ...

while observing the antics of "W.C.", i was thinking how cool it would be to select a theme or topic of consideration and begin at the beginning of cinema's history ... then, after selecting a theme: such as, "comedy" ... begin to walk through the decades of an "average life span" ... and, take note of the standards and changes in regards to what was then / and what are now the "social norms" of a society ... the thematic possibilities are endless!

when i expressed this "novel" concept of cinematic study and application to my oldest son ... i was somewhat suprised by his response ... from him i learned there are already actual college courses to that effect - known as "sociological cinema"

geez, i need to get out more! :)

Well, I hadn't thought about that and think it is a really cool idea and it is cool you thought it up :)

On a side note, I'm a lot like you with TV watching. I got DVR almost two years ago and went nuts on all the classic movie channels! I was looking through all the new channels at my disposal from the upgrade, and I discovered there was actually a "Documentary Channel"!!! Moments of silence are typically reserved for remembering sad things, but I had a moment of silence in honor of a major advancement in mankind.

I actually haven't been watching much TV lately. I just felt like I needed to put that in as a disclaimer in case I gave off the impression that I do . . .
