Subject: A new era

I lost my best friend on Valentine's Day. Bill had had a horrible year once diagnosed with Parkinson's and Alziemer's. He could no longer do what he loved. Aging is a real bitch! Not only did he lose his health, he lost his dignity. This once independent man could no longer drive, read, listen to his music or even wipe himself! I can only hope that he is now free from the pain and mental anguish he suffered.

It seems like only yesterday we worked and played together. Bill was twenty-four years older than I but it didn't seem like a problem until he got ill. Then, every time I saw him the gap widened until it was a chasm.

I felt as though I was not a very good person in that he tried my patience and frustrated me as we grew further and further apart as he aged. I know, that it frustrated him, too, and that he was often jealous that I could do what he no longer could.

He's in a better place now (nothing could have been worse than his last few months.) Here's hoping he's sitting somewhere with a good book in one hand and a martini in the other listening to some good jazz, Bill Evans perhaps or a little Dave Brubeck.

I'm entering a new era. AB (After Bill) I've lost a best friend, feel a little more lonely than the day before and viewing my own mortality with a magnifying glass. I'm feeling the need for a major change and perhaps moving to New Mexico (dependent on the sale of the house.)
There I will know no one, but once there I felt at home.

Laura

I am really in need of help I would apprecaite an answer as I am grieving: After 30+ yrs of frienship--best friendship--I mean travelling together each summer--having told eacbh other every thing about us---always relying on other for advice--etc---My friend e amiked me one day and said on the advice of his new therapist he was no longer going to write--call-correspond with me--nor see me. it was the worst shock of my life. We had recently been together on our summer vacation and got along great as always--I did realize his new therapist was having a great deal of influence on him. this happened last Spring--It will soon be a year--I got a christmas card--otherwise no communication---I am surprised that i still grieve the loss of this friendship so greatly--No one knows this but I am sad all the time--I love this man very much--it is not a sexual relationship--so i do not mean 'love' in a sexual way- I am a single man--Any advice on how to handle this?? Wow! i would appreciate this alot
