Subject: Dai Atlas' Leadership

(From last month's Transformer of the Month)

Dai Atlas is widely disliked by fans for his very unorthodox style of Autobot leadership. The standard form of Autobot leadership, standardised by Optimus Prime, is one that expouses compassion and mercy for all life. However, even Optimus Prime's Transformers Universe profile cites this compassionate form of leadership as an inherent weakness.

Fans have criticised Dai Atlas' leadership because it is drastically different from most other Autobot leaders - especially Optimus Prime. Although Dai Atlas is compassionate towards innocent and heroic characters, he is utterly merciless towards his enemies. Unlike many other Autobot commanders, Dai Atlas takes no prisoners. When he goes into battle, his objective is to destroy his opponents completely.

Despite what most fans think, I personally see this as Dai Atlas' greatest strength, rather than a weakness, when it comes to being an Autobot commander. First of all, the Autobots are fighting a war. War is a dirty business. Dai Atlas does not relish or enjoy killing his foes, but he certainly realises that it's an unfortunate necessity and reality of war. Dai Atlas realises that the Autobots must win this war in order to rid the galaxy of the Decepticon threat. Countless innocent lives are at stake - within the Transformers Zone OVA alone, we witness the Decepticons:
(a) Destroying an entire planet (Feminia), instantly making its entire population into refugees, not to mention nearly killing Victory Sabre.
(b) Launching a brutal assault on the Micromaster colony on the planet Zone and stealing the Energon-Zodiac.
(c) Randomly attacking targets on Earth, again placing countless human and Autobot lives in danger.

The Autobots have a moral obligation to defeat the Decepticons once and for all - particularly on Earth, since it was Optimus Prime who ultimately brought their war to the humans' world. As Autobot commander, Dai Atlas is entrusted with the task of defeating the enemy in order to protect all the life forms that are being threatened by the Decepticons. To this end, Dai Atlas is aware that he cannot afford to feel sympathy for his opponents, at least not in battle, and must show them no quarter in order to rid the universe of their evil.

This quality makes Dai Atlas a far more effectual military commander than Optimus Prime ever was. As a soldier, it is no more immoral for Dai Atlas to slay a Decepticon without second thought than it would be for anyone fighting for a greater cause, such as liberty and justice. Would it have been 'immoral' for an Allied soldier to kill a Nazi? Of course not, because Germany's European expansion and the Nazi's persecution of the Jews had to be stopped, no matter what. Dai Atlas holds a similar view towards the Decepticons. They must be stopped -- even if it means slicing them in half with his mighty Z-sword!
