Well, I doubt their design intentions really go further than what the toy designers had in mind, myself. At least, the characters themselves don't really play into either role too much. But I do think the designers had something in mind, especially when creating Gigatron- he's more demon than robot in appearance(though I guess a Cybertronian can plate their outer hull however they wish).
