You must have a rather limited experience with various training techniques if you find something like that abnormal.

It's basically a simple form of resistance training, with the same fundamental principle as other more commonly seen forms of such exercises like doing vertical push ups (off the wall push ups).

As Newton's Third Law (aka Law of Propulsion)states, "every action has an opposite and equal reaction," hence the amount of force you apply to a stationary object (e.g.: a wall or the ground) will, in return, return an equal amount of force/resistance.

We're essentially doing the same thing when training with weights and other forms of gym equipment. Using stationary objects like trees and walls is just cheaper. ;p
