Internet forums can be thought of a virtual ecological systems supporting virtual life. At the bottom of the food chain are the Users (like palnts - the need nutrents)Feeding upon the users are the trolls (like cows feeding on grass). At the top of the food chain is the Moderator which hunts trolls down without mercy (like a tiger). The "droppings" that the moderator leaves behind provides nutrients for the "grass" to grow. Such is the cycle of life in this virtual ecology.

Accordingly, if all the trolls are hunted away, the users dies, the forum dies and the role of the moderator becomes irrelevant :)
