Hi!
Kudos to you for paying such close attention to your son and choosing to be proactive in his eduction. I know how tough it can be. Our oldest son is 6 and in 1st grade and was just diagnosed with dyslexia in Oct 2011.
I know that the school system can be resistant to any type of discussion to do with dyslexia and/or testing, so I would recommend that you find an outside source that does dyslexia testing. I just went to Google and typed in dyslexia testing in Huntsville, AL and a few locations came up. I searched for the one with the best rating and gave them a call just to talk.
The first time I called, I was so much at my wits end with everything that I ended up in tears on the phone, but you know what? The girl on the phone was kind, caring and understanding because she knows what we as parents are going through! She spent time with me just listening to everything and telling me what they do when they test the kids and also gave me some suggestions for things we could do at home to help even if we didn't want to go forward with the test right now! It was such a relief to talk to someone who understood.
I know this was long winded, but I hope it helps. All this wasy to say...I would encourage you to find an outside testing source and at least give them a call to see what they can offer. And if they are not kind and caring on the phone, call another!!
If you have any specific questions for me, please feel free to email me directly at greyleigh@hotmail.com. I'll be happy to chat, listen or help however I can. I'm going through it all right now and know how it feels! You can do it and as his mom, you know in your heart what is best for him! Just remember, though, that this is a tough thing to go through and the support of both his parents will make it so much easier to get through this so it will really help when you two get on the same page. Hang in there and be patient...it's a hard thing to understand when you don't know anything about it. If you haven't been to the dyslexia website (www.interdys.org), it's got a wealth of information that really helps to understand what's going on for our kids. This article really helped me out too...http://www.ldonline.org/article/19296/
