I can totally relate to how you are feeling! My son was the same way in 1st grade and we did do the wait and see approach due to his teachers and partly because dad wasn't as supportive. It's always to much more helpful to feel supported and validated when it comes to concerns with out kids! My son is now in 2nd grade and is doing no better. I have also written for support if you'd like to read our whole story. I will be taking my son in to be tested for dyslexia on the 30th. I can't wait for answers! Upon my last meeting with the school I was informed that his 1st grade teacher misinformed me that he was tested for a learning disability. He was never tested. I was extremely disappointed in this information. My son is in the lowest 1-2 in his class. Apparently their reasoning for not taking things more seriously in first grade is because letter reversal is very common especially with d,b,p,and q. It is also isn't uncommon for children at this age to struggle with reading and writing. Therefore they wait it out to see if it just 'clicks' one day. Well for my son it never just 'clicked' and we are now further behind reading. My suggestion for you is to believe what your gut says. Only you know your child. I know for me I did all the school work with my son so it was really irritating to me that my husband didn't feel it was that big of a deal. Until I made him do all the reading and writing work with him. That way he could see what I was seeing. Also I know I see a lot of people referring others to these super expensive specialty clinics that specialize in dyslexia but we have a clinic within our normal health insurance network that is covered under 'mental health' since it has to be diagnosed by a licensed psychologist. Good luck and remember you are your child's best advocate!
