It sounds as though you are doing just what is needed. He needs to slowly build confidence by engaging in activities where he is 'the expert' and this will work towards helping him to see himself in a role other than being a failure. There is nothing like success to breed success. Sometimes as adults we push students too far too quickly and forget that children progress at different levels.
