Diane McGuinness is the lioness of decoding, and offers clear explanations of why a child must learn the structure of english spelling, what difficulties may be faced, and how to approach the problem.

"Why Our Children Can't Read, and What We Can Do About It" is a clear non-technical book on the subject, suitable for parents. Technical readers who want the research background and citations behind her arguments might try "Early Reading Instruction".
