I completely agree with your post - talking with the child and getting to know them by listening to them is so important.
My own son spent most of his junior school years being classed as the "naughty boy" - he had very few friends, was disruptive in class. He would hide his homework as he normally could not complete it because he had not had time to write down the questions at the end of class and was too embarrased to say anything. He also used to wet his bed quite regularly.
Once he was tested and diagnosed with dyslexia and was then given more attention at school he changed completely and the bed wetting stopped.
The fact that the teachers at school spent time to talk to him and assist him made a huge difference.
