The trouble with books for beginners is that the baby was thrown out with the bathwater when Dick and Jane were abandoned. The Dick and Jane readers introduced one word at a time, whereas the leveled readers that are fashionable right now don't control the vocabulary this way. Phonetic books control the words phonetically, but the vocabulary increases too quickly for dyslexic kids. We need to control the vocabulary by number as well as by phonetic principle. The trouble is words with irregular spellings. I color-code my vowels to translate the crazy spellings, introduce words a few at a time, and prepare all words for a book before starting it. I agree with you that children really enjoy a book when they are completely prepared for it. The free email attachments on my website have materials that teach phonics through games, teach non-phonetic words (with "crazy" spellings) through games, prepare the words for retold fairy tales through games. These things require printing and cutting, but they mean you aren't dragging a baffled and unwilling child through his or her lessons. My website: www.mnemonicpictures.com. Ann Turner
