Reading should be enjoyed, as teachers we can see when a child is struggling as we have had plenty of experience. One of the biggest hurdles we have is educating the parents who just want the child to continue rushing through levels of graded readers! Not realising there isn't a prize for getting to level 10. We have tried workshops about how to read to children we have stressed the importance of retelling stories and using the characters and stories to talk about day to day situations but the parents have a hard time letting go of the desire for their child to be reading age inappropriate books.
