Hallo,

I have been teaching in an English-German school in Germany and have had similar thoughts regarding my dyslexic students. My initial reaction is that the stress of struggling with one language is doubled in the bilingual environment. My students have had many frustrating and exhausting experiences trying to decode a set of symbols that can make two different sounds depending on the language.

However, students are entitled to learn using which ever method is best suited, and as such we are obliged to teach to their strengths and interests. My dyslexic students have been quite verbose, and can communicate, learn and record orally and aurally at quite a high level in both languages. In our school system we are obliged to accept these methods of researching and recording, and are also required to teach dyslexic students in these methods.

Two languages means more input, and more skills required for reading and writing. I would suggest two teachers and two very separate sets of learning materials to help the student define the language (graphic and phonetic) boundaries. I'd love to hear more ideas though!
